I thought some of you might enjoy seeing this custom build from the 50's.

Guynotorious 10-16-24 08:46 AM

My back is hurting just looking at it.

Iride01 10-16-24 08:48 AM

I use to have a bike exactly like that. But it was a different geometry. <grin>

cyclezen 10-16-24 09:12 AM

DON'T show this to the UCI...
They may decide to incorporate some of this into new rules...

Ride On

I'm breaking my brain trying to figure out why someone would deliberatelly do that, and all I can come up with is they huffed spray paint cans....

442dude 10-16-24 04:44 PM

I don't think my body bends like that....

50PlusCycling 10-17-24 03:40 AM

No kidding, after one ride it was quickly decided that one such bike was enough.

What group set are you running on there?

grant40 10-17-24 04:09 PM

There was a guy in my town that had a bike similar to that and it was spray painted yellow. He rode it to work everyday.

Wildwood 10-17-24 09:39 PM

needs more unused bottom brackets.

edit: How many clowns does it take to ride that thang?

VegasJen 10-17-24 10:58 PM

Looks like some kind of medieval torture device.

Oh dear. Just on paper I could tell you that is extremely unstable, the tire contact patch is so far ahead of the steering axis, assuming I have the intended riding direction correct. Even a small offset like that has been proven to be unstable. That much might be too much for the rider to even control with both hands on the handlebars.

I also don't know how they could sit, have their legs that far up and forward, and still be able to pedal, and reach the handlebars without interference.

This is a bike to put in front of a physics 1 class and say, "What is wrong with this picture? List every design aspect that is wrong."

I would have loved to see the builder ride it for all the reasons you point out.

it's not from the 50s. It was built for a RatRodBikes.com build-off in 2008. It's called the Get Lucky. It was entries with ergos like this that prompted the rule that a riding video had to be entered with the final pictures for judging.

Gaskill made great bikes. He's an artist.

Here's another entry for a different build off. It's called Josephine:

My very first thought in seeing the pic was "I hope the shorts are double-padded."

Then I had another thought or two after looking at the whole bike... (which have been addressed nicely by others :) )

Didn't you see the "Hop Shop" logo? All hopped up?

rsbob 10-18-24 02:29 PM

”The low rider, rides a little higher” which apparently he was during creation.

Psst: the fairing in on backwards creating additional drag, IF you can get the thing moving.

grant40 10-18-24 02:51 PM

I feel like the alt bike culture forum would really like this.

At least there will be one well illuminated front tire.

It might have taken 2 people to ride, one laying back and pedaling, one laying on top of pedaler, steering with feet.... think doubles luge
