Training for Ride for the Roses -- newbie
I'm new to riding -- have been riding a beat up old bike about 60 miles per week for several weeks and before that would ride mostly at the gym for about 45-60 minutes at a time for over a year. I've never ridden a charity ride, but want to do Ride for the Roses in Austin in October. I need to sign up for a distance -- any suggestions between the 40 and 70 mile lengths? I'm leaning towards 40, which I really feel I could do, especially since I'm training more and more each week. Any advice? Thanks!

I suggest starting with the 40 mile route. When I started doing the ride for the roses three years ago I started with the 40 (then they called it 35). Last year I stepped up to the 70 and let me say it was a major step. This year I am riding 100. I suggest about 2 to 3 weeks before the ride trying to see if you can at least ride 30 miles. Keep in mind there are rest stops every 9 to 15 miles and since it is your first time make use of them. But ultimately enjoy yourself and take your time.

it's a fun ride fairly flat, 40 sounds like a good distance for a new rider. the weather can be tuff though last year it was 93 degrees and really humid, the year before that it was very cold and rainy....be prepared BTW i did the century both times

You have a couple of awesome shops within minutes of you. Check out The Urban Bicycle Gallery off/near Washington and Durham or West End Bikes off Blossom. Speak to Paul at the gallery or Austin at West End. They'll set you straight.
Oh and get a mountain bike! You have some nice local trails at MP to explore.
Good luck!
