Rage at uTexas PTS: Bike decal

Ok, this is crazy.
https://www.utexas.edu/parking/transportation/biking/

They want me to put WHAT? WHERE? for how many marshmallows? Now granted, I generally ride my mtb-with-slicks to campus -- I *might* deign to put some sort of sticker -- but every once in a while I want to go on a serious ride after campus on my cheap-but-dear-to-me roadie. School spirit or not, burnt orange sticker on a red and white Specialized? I'm no OCP, but no thank you!

Why on EARTH are they requiring this? Bureaucratic morons.

what happens if you lock your bike up on campus without this decal? (i looked at the site, but didn't see, sorry if it says and i missed it)

it seems like they're trying to keep track of the poeple who bike, it may help in case of bike theft, though it seems no different than registering with the police

I question the legality of requiring registration from visitors, especially since they don't require any special registration of visitors' automobiles. Someone at the TBC might have more insight into the legal status of UT roadways.

If you're locked to one of the university bike racks, they cut your lock and impound your bike. If you're locked to anything else, you're "locked illegally" and they cut your lock and impound your bike. I'd be all up on a voluntary program; each one of my bikes has a nifty engraved serial number on it. Bike theft has gotten to be pretty bad on campus, and I'm sure they're under pressure to "do something" about it. *sigh*

I've graduated to the "crotchety old man who writes scathing letters to the editor" stage of life. I wrote the following to Firing Line, the University newspaper opinion column:

I'm sure we've all been enjoying the e-mails from Colleen Stole, the UT Share coordinator, about finding non-driving "commute solutions", but I can't think of a more mixed message to send after PTS began requiring bike registration on campus. Apart from removing the bike racks entirely, I can't think of a stronger detriment to someone wishing to try cycling to campus than the knowledge that his bike lock will be cut and his bike will be impounded.

During the spring I biked to campus often. Now that the temperature is reaching reasonable levels I had looked forward to doing so again, but this useless, wasteful level of bureaucracy really annoys me. I'm sure with the current fight over tuition increases the idea of stealing students' bikes and selling them back at $10 a pop sounds appealing, but will it really pay for all those bright orange stickers?

That hideous orange sticker is really gonna clash with my red and black bike colors
