Roundtop Drive actually offers a very nice view of Honolulu, but I guess most of the tourists don't know about it-->we saw very few cars there. I think if I ever bike that path again, I'm going to bring a backpack to pick up all those ripe mangos planted/dropped all along the path...can make some nice mango pudding dessert after the ride.
First time I rode up, I went up Roundtop Drive and came down the Tantalus side. Not the best way, in my opinion. The Tantalus side tends to have more sharp turn and the road tends to be rougher - not good for downhill. Also, I think it has more tree shade so the resulting effect of the light/dark spots on the road with the sun through the trees tends to make it harder to see really bad spots in the road. On the other hand, riding up that side, you can't go fast so the roughness doesn't matter as much and the shade helps when working hard.

Did you stop in the park on the Roundtop Drive side (about 2.5 miles up)? There is an overlook there which give a great panaramic view of most of that side of the island.
