When should I buy a new chain?

I have owned my bicycle for 18 mos. and have ridden a fair amount. Is it time for a new chain? What kind of difference would a new chain make? Are there some chains that are better than others? I thought I heard someone at the bike store suggesting one should change their chain every six mos. but then again that it was the dentist says too and i've been fine without heeding his opportunistic advice.

"Someone at the bike store" likes selling chains. You replace your chain when it's worn out. 12 links should measure 12 inches. When it measures 12-1/16 inches, your replace the chain.
