Yes it is possible for quakes to shake the midwest. In fact there is a fault line here in the midwest. So earthquakes do not just happen in California. I felt the tremor as did most of the city.
Thankfully no one was hurt and the only kind of serious damage was cracked basement walls closer to the epicenter. It happened around 2:42 yesterday afternoon.

Let's just hope that everyone in Fairbanks Alaska is alright, there was an earthquake there yesterday that registered at 7.5 on the richter scale.
