Saddle too narrow?

Hello,

How do you tell if your saddle is too narrow? It feels like my sit bones are resting on each edge of the saddle. My old Schwinn, with a wider seat, is more comfortable on longer rides but I'm not sure if it's due to the saddle or something else.

Thanks.

The rear wide part of the bike seat must be wide enough to comfortably and easily accommodate your sit bones with at least 2cm spare on each side. Measurements of adult sit bones can be done by sitting on a piece of corugated cardboard or styro foam (your LBS might use memory foam). The measurement is centre to centre. If you sit upright the width is greater than if you ride in an a road bike position. Brooks B.17 which many swear by is 170mm.

Thanks for the reply. I'll have to find some cardboard and measure myself but it sounds like my seat is too narrow. I was thinking of looking at those saddles by Specialized that come in different sizes and they can measure you for.

Many of the specialized saddles comes in widths of 152,143 and 132 or something like that.

I had that problem with a B17 actually. My sit bones were right on the edges. I guess I ride very upright and/or have very wide sitbones. Now I have a B67 which seems like it's going to be better (plus it's sprung! Hello comfort!) but until it's broken in I won't know 100% for sure.

I got measured by this method and for me it did not work. Bought the saddle they suggested and went back to my old Flite Saddle eventually.(One of the narrow saddles) Lot more to saddle comfort than just buying one because it still has to be set up for you. Nose angle,Height, fore and aft position. and then the width of the nose aswell. I Take hours sorting the saddle and it is not easy. but I have gone to Wide saddles to wide padded saddles to short saddles- you name it and I have tried it. Keep trying but find a friendly LBS and ask if you can sit on a few bikes- Find the type of saddle on a bike that suits you and buy it. Sitting on a saddle is the only way to see if it may fit. Then spend the hours setting the saddle up =---Again.

Same here. B-67's rule! The B-17 was too narrow. Both my 67's were perfect right out of the box. The first one now has about 1200 miles on it. Number 2 is going on 300. No discomfort at all.

EDIT: B-67 width is 210mm.
