Hi folks,
I'm brand new to this forum, and would like to ask about a used bike. It's a Pinarello 805 frame with alot of upgrades. the frame was made in the mid- 80's. The emblem on the front, below the handle bars says, Pinarello, Treviso, with Marca dep. at the bottom, the bike is blue and white and is a racer. The guy says he has approx. $1100.00 in this bike. He bought it used a few years ago and has some pretty nice equipment on it. He's asking $500.00. I'm new to biking, so I don't know prices or values.

The price MAY be a bit high, but it is definitely my kind of bike. If it fits you properly and has been well-maintained, it can serve your needs for many years to come.

I can't tell what condition it's in, but the price sounds good. The real question is this:
Is this bike the right size for you???

What components does it have?

Have you ridden the bike?

that frame probably have a Campy seven speed downtube groupo,

What kind of componets does it have?

I'll do my best to discribe them. Almost everything is marked shimano 600 . the frame says montello'85 blue and white 21".

Fork is K Road-D Kinesis alum., Tires are Panarace Stradius zero slip trip compound 700X 20C 20-622.

Wheels are marked Mavic Cosmos (France) 6106-622X15. Seat is Brooks (England) champion special B.17.

Gear shifter up front says shimano RSX . The gismo that moves the chain at the rear wheel is shimano 600 515, or SIS.

The guy selling the bike says the componets are next to the best. in between mid grade and best. does this sound right? Thanks for all the good advice. Regars, Kirk

I am sure that someone else can be more precise on this, but Shimano 600 components would be minimally 5-10 years old. 600 was good stuff, but always below Dura Ace, Shimano's top of the line.

I am going to hazard a guess that most of the stuff on the bike is older than the gent is letting on--the components are probably original, which means mid-1980s. But, that doesn't mean that the bike is overpriced. If the frame is still in good shape, it may soon start to have collector's value.

If you are buying it for riding (and not just collecting), make sure it fits. If it doesn't fit, then any amount of money would make it overpriced.

One thing I would consider is if the bike or should I say FRAME is that old... make sure the frame is in good shape...as you said it was a racer? Find out if it was raced and if it was raced alot.

A racing frame will have more strain put on it (most of the time) and that should be a cause to worry about.

A friend of mine just bought a '98 Litespeed Titanium frame with '98 Dura for $2200. The guy who previously owned it raced the hell out of it. He said that he put on 35,000 miles....yes 35,000 and not 3500 miles. He asked me if he got a good deal on the bike, I told him that hopefully the frame is in good condition, but I seriously doubt it... too much strain and too many miles on the frame.

First off check the frame...then check to see if it fits.

says has a little over 12,000 miles on the bike. the owner says


he replaced most of these componets. I don't know how exactly


to measure for fit, but when I stand stradle of the bike, I have

approx. 1 to 1 1/2 " under my crotch. Does that seem right, or

Sounds like it fits.

Being new to riding, you have to realize that you'd be purchasing what many here would call a classic bike. It will perform as well as anything newer and way better than anything new in the same price range.

If you are commited to starting riding, this would be a great way to enter the sport.

Show him $350.00-$400.00 cash with the rest in $20.00 increments.

Hey, I just remembered, I recently purchased a digital camera, and if I can figure out how to post it on here, I'll take a pic of the bike and try to get it on here.

My son gave my wife a digital cam for christmas. The hard part is finding the picture file when you have downloaded it from the camera to the PC. Once you have done that, there is a box under the 'post reply' area for attaching a file to your reply, press the browse button to get it from your PC. Watch out for the size limit, but if you set the camera to 640 X 480 resolution you should be OK.
