Bike Car Rack
So I'll be getting my first car in a couple of days (I'm 17), and I'm going to need a bike rack because I won't be able to fit my bike into the back like I did with my mom's car. So I'm now in the market for a bike rack, but I have no idea what's good or what to look for. I want something that will hold at least 2 bikes, and I'd like it to have some kind of lock. Any suggestions based on personal experience or from what you've heard?

A hitch mounted rack is most convenient. Get one that can swing down or to the side to allow hatch/trunk access. Wirh a roof rack you may get injured hoisting the bike up there, or may forgetfully drive it into the garage and destroy it.
I don't know the answer for locking it.
If the new car doesn't have a hitch receiver they can usually be mounted pretty cheaply by U-Haul, or there are some do-it-yourself ones.

As cooker mentioned a hitch rack is the most convinient, but the priciest option. When I was going to put in a hitch rack on our Lumina it was going to cost around $250 at U-haul. That included the hitch, plus installation. Then I was looking at another $200 for the actual hitch rack and a top tube adaptor for my younger brother's bike. That was too much to spend IMO and I never got the hitch rack.
Another option would be a trunk rack. I've heard excellent things about the Saris Bones rack and racks from Thule and Yakima.

The trunk rack is probably the cheapest way to go. I have a roof rack but be advised you have to buy the rack, then the mounts for your car, then the actual bike attachment. I still like them and they are sturdy and handy. If you can find a used unit then you would be well advised to get it. Yakima and Thule make excellent products. I have the Yakima and love it.

Saris makes a good trunk rack(Bones).
I bought a hitch for ~$120 that took me less than ten minutes to install on my Honda Element. I got a two bike rack from PerformanceBike.com for $130. I liked this model because the bikes don't touch each other and they don't even wiggle while riding down the road. I have a Kryptonite cable lock that I can loop through both bikes' wheels, frames and the rack. There's also a safety strap that wraps around each bike and the rack for a bit of extra security while driving on long trips. The rack will hold roadies, mtb., hybrids, etc.
Check here for hitches: https://www.hitchesonline.com/index.htm
With the hitch receiver I can also tow a small trailer, boat, etc.
here's the saris site: https://www.saris.com/ They have all types of racks.
Saris Bones 3 is $150
