Giant U-Lock by Kryptonite

Hello,

I bought a Giant (by Kryptonite) heavy duty ATB shackle U-lock with bracket.
A search in the bikeforums.net did not have a single Giant by Kryptonite thread.

The retail price was $24.99 plus tax. The thing that concerns me is that this product model is not displayed in the Kryptonite website, so I assume it might be an outdated model.

Is it best to return it and invest in a Kryptonite New York 3000?
I found one on eBay. https://cgi.ebay.com/Kryptonite-New-Y...QQcmdZViewItem

BTW, the one sold on eBay (link provided above), is that legitimate original Kryptonite u-lock?

The model on the website reads New York Lock - STD and not Kryptonite New York 3000.

[QUOTE=Kwak]Hello,

Yes. Get a good chain or cable to go with it as well.

Hi CastIron,
Thanks for the reply. I am returning it tomorrow and decided on these two.

Well, I took a look at the ad yesterday. It specified "No Returns". Also, the required address confirmation before shipping if payed through paypal. If paid by money order, no confirmation needed. I didn't really care for the tone of this footnote.

Got ripped off on ebay ..... maybe

Kwak, I hope you didn't buy that lock from ebay. I bought it from the same posting by this seller, and it turns out that it is a NY std as opposed to NY 3000 which is what was advertised. I've written to the seller to complain. Let's see if they "resolve" the matter. Do I have any recourse through ebay if the seller doesn't resolve the discrepency?

I wonder if anyone on this board knows what the difference in security level is between the NY std versus the NY 3000 lock? Also, the difference in their weights?

Both locks are rated four stars by the ART foundation and Gold by Sold Secure. Both are very good locks which should keep your bike safe if used properly.

Kwak - the Giant locks are branded Giant by Kryptonite and they are listed on their website in their parts & accessories section here:
https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/035....asp?range=230
The reason you can't find them on Kryptonite's site is because we only have Kryptonite branded products on our site. Hope that answers your question

Yellowmango - when the cylinder in the New York Lock changed to the disc-style cylinder in 2000, the name changed to the New York 3000. Since then, we have gone back to the name The New York Lock, but some sellers still call it the New York 3000 (you know when you get a name in your head it sticks? That's what happens here). However, if you have the new version of the New York Lock, keep it! It does say std on the newest packaging to let you know the size at a glance. It has updates from the New York 3000 version. How to tell? The actual New York 3000 looks like the one on our splash page www.kryptonitelock.com You could see the metal on the crossbar. The newer ones have the coating all over the crossbar. Weight difference? Honestly, I don't remember about the NY3000, but the current New York Lock is 3.9 pounds. Hope that helps to answer your question. Oh, to Ziemas' point - no matter what version, it passed the hightest level tests.

Happy Weekend and Safe Riding.

Good to have you here. I wish more manufactorer's had reps here - at least if they disclosed their affiliation.

Donna, thanks for posting here. I'm much relieved now and happy about my new Kryptonite New York lock. Since you are a representative of Kryptonite, may I suggest that you convey to your web content team that they update their product page to reflect the name change for the Kryptonite New York 3000. That will alleviate the confusion of a lot of people.
Cheers!

Hi there - sorry for the delay, but 'weekends happen' (thankfully!). Glad to be here with y'all.
Yellowmango - Guess what? You are right (but you knew that, didn't you?!). I'll have the product page updated this week and....stay tuned for a whole new site soon. THAT makes me happy.

Donna, here's another issue on the web site. The KCL description says 6' x 1/2" on the Products page https://www.kryptonitelock.com/inetis...cleFind@Public
but 5' x 3/8" on the Details page
https://www.kryptonitelock.com/inetis...s_item&pgrp=20

Btw, there are no weights listed for the Keeper U-locks.

DMF - thanks for the tip. We changed it this week!
Yellowmango - I sent our product guy to change the New York Lock page, too, but the website doesn't say anything about '3000' on that product page. If we missed it and you can point me to it, I'll gladly have it changed in a snap!
Have a great weekend everyone.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I have an old Giant by Krytonite lock(circa 2006). Been mountain biking for the past decade so never really used it. Now thinking about more city(Boston) use. Is this lock total Bic pen garbage?

Does it have a flat or tubular key? Only the tubular key models were Bic-able.
