Object for measuring distance?

Sorry for the ignorant question, but I've recently gotten into biking. I'm not really aware of all the gadgets out there, but I am looking for something that I can attach to my bike that will measure how many miles I have gone. Hopefully it's inexpensive as well. I hope I don't sound foolish for asking and hope you all may help me Thanks!

Ignorance is excusable, stupidity is another matter.

It's called a cyclometer and they run from $20 to $300 depending on the bells and whistles. Much better than the old fashioned cable speedometers of the 70's. I have one of those old monsters and is yours free for the shipping.

Check the sponsors for options. I liked the cateye astrale for a starter. You can get it with cadence which turns out to be helpful for under $30 with tax. I would suggest checkingout at LBS as it's so much a personal prefence thing. Some fonts are harder to read that others and size of font is an issue some times.

The free alternative is to get a map, or use google ped map, and measure or click out your route and see how far you went. The google map takes time, but is fairly accurate.

Thank you, I am going to look into what you suggested. If I come across anything, and need further assistance, I'll be back here. I'm glad it's not too expensive and is of added value.

I actually wasn't aware google had a ped map as well! That could work too. Thank you!

It's great that you ask questions here. We're glad to help feel free to ask anythng you'd like.

+1 to hiyosilver's response.

You may also want to ask the people at your Local Bike Shop, or LBS. They can offer differant types of bike computers as they are also called. Like hiyosilver mentioned you can spend from $30 up to $300.00.

I picked up one of these from Pricepoint about a month ago. So far it's working fine. Nothing too fancy and it's a little bit complicated to set (instructions are included though), but it will tell total odometry, trip distance, trip time, average trip speed, and current speed.

That's what my first one did, lucky. The one I use now gives cadence, which I rate more highly than the other functions, and it was no harder to set up than the others.

Someday, manufactorers will assign someone the project of following their own instructions. They will immediately become easier to follow.

It wasn't really that bad, but with 6 point font translated from Chinese and only two buttons to push, I was worried for just a minute after I put in the wrong circumference. I was also kind of surprised they didn't have a suggested rolling circumference listed for a 2.1 inch tire. I know I'm not the only mountain biker out there with a computer on his hardtail.
