I don't think this is a problem but thought I would ask. I have been hanging my road bike and now my mountain bike in the garage from those hooks that you get at the hardware store. Other than the damage that you can possibly do when putting on and taking off is there any effect on the rims from hanging your bikes?

I don't think there would be any problem. The rims are capable of handling humungous stress, and when they're hanging up they're under no stress. If the hooks are bare metal you could use handlebar tape or duct tape to cushion them.

What he ^^^ said. If the rims could handle the weight of the bike, the weight of you and bumps and hits, then it hanging with only the weight of the bike would be nooooooooooooo problem.

You can always try hanging the bike by the frame. That's what I do. I got something from the big hardware store that pretty much looks like it was meant for bikes. It has two arms that stick out at about 16 inches apart and they are coated with a soft material so the bike doesn't get scratched. I love them. I have them for all the bikes in the house.

I once saw a video of someone hanging off a bike and pedaling while the front wheel was hung up on one of those hooks. They pedaled for about 3 seconds when the hook came loose from the ceiling, bike and person came crashing down.

moral of the story, is the wheel can take more stress than the ceiling/hook.

I saw these type of hooks at an IKEA store that was integrated with their garage racking systems.

I have all of my bikes hung from the garage ceiling using the large vinyl coated screw-in cup hooks. I used to hang them by both wheels, but they took up too much space. I moved the hooks into a single row on the ceiling about 12" away from wall spaced 18" apart (stud spacing). I alternate the hanging end of the bikes (front wheel/rear wheel) to get more bikes in less space. And I only hang my good road bike (carbon fork) or good MTB (shock fork) from the rear wheel....

all of our bikes hang from their front wheel on the micheal angelo hooks (just a fanicer version of of the hardware store hooks) ALL of them... from our MTB's to our full carbons... and they are all A-OK!

Hangin's too good for them thar walmart bikes. I just stake 'em out in the desert and leave 'em to the buzzards.
