Roofrack blunders
The "worst maintainence blunders" post got me thinking about two seperate incidences that occurred to a couple of my friends w/their bike/bikeracks! I'm sure there are others....if you're brave enough to tell us!
1) My best kayaking buddy, part time biker lived in an apartment w/underground parking. The opening of the entrance was (I'm guessing here) approx. 9' or so and the height of his bike on top of his truck was......well let's just say it was higher than 9' (you can see what's coming can't you??? Don't jump ahead of me here!!!). Well the old adage of "out of sight out of mind" absolutely applied as he went whipping right into the parking entrance one evening only to to realize, at the sound of scrapping and something "dancing" on his roof, his folly! He was fairly lucky in that all that was damaged was the seat and post (not the bike). Now this is bad enough to do once. In fact I couldn't believe he actually admitted it to me . The real kicker was when he did the very same thing the following weekend
Same results!
He did learn his lesson after incident #2!
2) Similar story here. Another of my old kayaking lady friends was also into biking part time! Good for her! Her apartment in a rundown area of Atlanta (being reclaimed by decent apartments an housing) was surrounded by iron rod fencing. The entrance-way had this fancy-schmancy arch over it. Now, she had been through this w/said bike on top of her Explorer many times. The trick was you had to veer to the center to attain the proper clearance. In her hurry to meet all of us one evening she forgot about the "veering to center" part of the escape route and the bike reached out and grabbed the iron rod archway! Now either she had a terrific bike rack that didn't want to let go of the bike or she didn't have it secured on there too well as it ripped the entire bike and bike rack right off her Explorer.
My flair for screwing up with the bike seems to be more suited to spectacular wrecks (I've only had two, but they were beauties!). However, as I mentioned at the top, I'm sure there are others who have stories just as ugly!
Care to share**********??

After picking my mtn bike up at the shop after some repairs, my dad pulled into a parking garage at the mall. My bike was on the rack on top of the car. There was an awful sound and my bike was pulled from the jaws of the Thule bike rack.
My bike was OK, except for a patch of black rubber on the frame (it rubbed off pretty easily).
In a way, I was disappointed... The bike was getting pretty old and beat-up and I would have loved for my dad to buy me a new one out of guilt!
