In the 1960s, I broke shift cables frequently with Huret Allvit gear. In the 1970s, I broke front cables occasionally with a heavily-sprung reverse-shift SunTour SL front derailleur. Since most other derailleurs made since 1970 require relatively low activation tension, and since cable technology MAY have improved over the years, I no longer feel the need to carry spare gear cables.
