OMG the subaru argument, no doubt they have some advantages... except they aren't a true AWD only two wheels are under power at any given time(unless you have an STI with LSD) I helped some
schmuck get his car out of a stuck this winter, he dropped a couple wheels off the road (5 inches)
not even highcentered, but the two off the road just spun and spun, the other two
just sat there waiting. Yes he was a schmuck cause he drove up a road that is closed in the winter
except for snowmobile and foot traffic.
How about instead of eating up natural resources to build a new car, recycle and find a great used car.
You want lots of room, I'd suggest a Chevy Astro, available in AWD gets decent gas mileage, and if you
want really great gas mileage take out the V6 put a V8 in and most who have made the change make
at least 30+ on the highway. Or the Scion Xb(boxy one) should work nicely...

The 2000 Toyota Sienna I had was the best. with the seats out two road bikes and or a tandem inside was no problem. I have a 2006 Volvo wagon now. The tandem goes on top . a single road bike fits inside with wheels on or 2 bikes with front wheels off.
BTW most minivan accidents around here are usually caused by morons weaving in and out of traffic in Jettas and Passants with cellphones stuck in their ears

Dad had an Astro with the 4.3, and IIRC, it was 18, maybe 20mpg. It was supposed to have 3.42 limited slip--but when the axle seals were replaced, it was clearly an open diff, so it may have had 3.08's for all I know. Anyhow, the point was, a V8 swap would/could only make better mpg's if you were to ignore some of the emission equipment (mostly exhaust stuff) and run a nice steep gear like a 3.08, along with EFI and probably just a 305.
After all, it's just a big box on wheels, and not a light one at that. I've heard some people comment that the full size vans would get about the same mpg but with more cargo room etc.
