I want to start riding with clipless again;
I’m sure I will on the road and think I will on the mountain bike in the next month or so. Here is my question; is there a shoe and a pedal that could be used for both road and off-road? If not, I already have a set of Shimano PD-M515 for the mountain bike. I know they will fit but would there be a problem using these pedals on my road bike? It’s a Cannondale T-900 touring bike. Thanks

This is what i have now.

I don't want to keep swapping the pedals I have now from bike to bike, I would just buy 2 sets of the same pedal. Perhaps another set of M515’s.

Bikes: Custom (Colin Laing) 531c fast tourer/audax, 1964 Flying Scot Continental, 1995 Cinelli Supercorsa, Holdsworth Mistral single speed, Dahon Speed 6 (folder), Micmo Sirocco and a few more
I use them with MTB shoes (Specialized comp) and they are fine, but the rubber grips on the shoes squeak sometimes.

I use a Shimano MTB pedal on my road bike. The one I use has a platform on one side and a clip on the other. This way if I just want to tool around the neighborhood with my wife I don't have to get all dressed up.
Also I find it easier to walk around when I stop with a MTB shoe. I don't have to worry about slipping as much and I don't sound like a horse clip clopping down the street.

I have MT pedals on my MT bike and my road bike. There is no advantage to road pedals over MT pedals for the riding you do, or that I do and I ride 40+ milea 3-4 times a week.
MT shoes are much beter for walking.

I have the M515 pedal on my road bike also. I also have a mtb/commuter/run around town bike that I use the shimano PDM324 that is dual sided for use with regular shoes. I use mtb shoes for the road bike and mtb, but recently I have purchaced a pair of road bike shoes. I like them both but if I had to chose one it would be the mtb shoes with the double sided pedals.
I also know lots of road bike riders that use egg beater pedals on their road bike!

I am using Crank Bros. Eggbeaters. They were designed for MTB, but they make a cleat for road shoes too.
So far I like them, but I have not been off road with them.

I really like my M515s. there are people out there that will bash them, but they offer a really good range of adjustment. be forewarned, though. they are MTB pedals. I have pulled out of them before going into a sprint. I think this trade-off is OK though, because I can get out easliy if I am falling over.

Thanks, I will be getting some Mt. bike shoes (high top) for bad ankle support. I don't do much sprinting but when I get to that point I will get road shoes and pedals. Again, Thanks to all of you for the input on this and other matters here in this forum.
By the way NEVER and I mean NEVER cut off a cast on you broken ankle to go to the beach when your 21 years old...........It will suck when your 30+.
