Owning a mt bike and a road bike?
I wrote on here a while back about thinking I got sold the wrong bike. It was a Cannondale f400 and I wanted to commute to work. I do think that is sort of the wrong bike for that, but I happened to take my cannondale off road and now...well, I'm totally hooked! I still ride it to work, but now I also hit the trails at every opportunity.
That does not solve my problem of wanting to get further, faster. I live in the boonies and getting anywhere takes awhile, especially on a bike. I'm thinking that maybe I ought to buy a road bike for when I want to get somewhere on the pavement, but keep my mountain bike for trails and road rides where speed is not important.
I looked at a Giant OCR1..last years model for $800. I have the money, but wonder if I'm a fool for spending so much on bikes. I ride every day and simply cannot get enough of it. I just need to get further in a shorter amount of time.

You are not a fool. You are just realizing that bikes are tools and for every job there is the correct tool.

Lots of people on BF have multiple bikes, and the cliché is that the correct number of bikes to own is always n+1, where n=the number of bikes you already own.
If you want a road bike that doubles as a commuter, does that mean you want one that can hold a rack and fenders? I bought a used tour bike as my road bike/commuter, and that's how I have it set up.

Just think of it like owning multiple pairs of shoes. You won't wear dress shoes for road biking and biking shoes for normal wear etc...

I am just a slow fat chick and even I have two bikes.
My road bike is below(Fuji) and my MTB(Trek) is in my Avatar. If you love MTB'ing like I do, you just simply cannot have just one bike. And, the MTB really sucks on roads for anything more than a quick jaunt around the neighborhood.

well, I'm up to 1 road bike, 1 front suspension MTB and 1 no-suspension MTB.
and, I think I'm adding another road bike in the VERY near future - this time with a triple instead of just my current double.
That one will be my mountain road bike.
So, no, nothing wrong with owning more than 1 - as stated above, different tools for different jobs/different playtimes.

I have never heard of anybody ever having been arrested for owning too many bikes (I did not say having
) Cats...yes, Dogs....yes, Sheep...yes, bikes? Nope. FWIW there are currently 26 or so bikes at my place with fully half of them ridable with only 4 belonging to my wife Now I will admit to being an accumulator and hate to part with something once I get it. I also collect vintage British bikes. But I do ride all the ones I have that are currently ridable. Nothing wrong in my book with having more than one bike or even having a couple of the same type
You just never know when you may need to take a friend riding with you

A fool for wanting more bikes? Bah.
Here's my breakdown:
1 high end road bike (I used to race with, now just do long rides on)
1 full-susp. xc bike (you have to have at least one mtb)
1 fully rigid, single speed mtb (grocery getter and part time commuter)
1 cyclocross bike (for cyclocross races when I get my lazy butt off the couch, main commuter, soon to be touring bike)
1 old steel bianchi road bike, slowly being turned into a fixie, just for the hell of it
1 smokin beach cruiser (for cruising to the pub and commuting when I feel like thumbing my nose at the wannabe hardcore commuting crowd).
I've already got my eye on a cheap lowrider since I don't have a lowrider, and since its cheap, why not get a lowrider.
I hope that helps.

I started like you, with a mountain bike. Then I bought a used Specialized Allez and really fell in love with road riding. Then I sold the Allez and bought a Bianchi Eros, did a pro fitting, upgraded lots of stuff, and got even deeper into riding. Then I rode a fixed gear bike and got into that, too.

For the record I am a woman and just to make things crystal clear...I do NOT have a wife! Or a husband for that matter....well, I do, but that is just a technicality...never mind, you don't want to know.

I have a small fleet. Just as I have a garage full of bikes, I also have a garage full of tools. Each has it's own purpose. You own more than one screwdriver?

Get the road bike. Then pretty soon you'll find out you need to add a cruiser, a fixed gear, a cyclocrosser, a tri/TT bike, a tourer, etc.
