Running is rough....

I can do a century but I can't even do a half a marathon

I can't say which is harder in general; for me running more than about 3 miles is like a death sentence. I think your attitide does come into play quite a bit at this level of exertion. We all think riding bikes is fun, so a century, even a hard one, doesn't seem as painful as a run. [thanks, pg]

IF you ran a marathon and then did a centruy 3 weeks later, remember, your base fitness was already WAY up there, so all you'd need really was saddle time to get comfortable and get your leg muscles familiar with pedaling vs striding. It's not a surprise you felt the century was pretty easy.

For those that say "there's no coasting" in running, what about walking? You don't have to actually RUN the whole course to complete the event. Run, walk, jog whatever. Unless you're racing (in which case there's very little coasting on a bike!), you can ease off your stride to rest a bit. You can even stop for a few minutes if you need and then start back up again.

I can ride a century, a marathon would be a killer though.

I have done both and can say without hesitation that a Century is WAY easier than a marathon.

In fact, I ride one or two centuries every weekend. I could never run more than one marathon in a weekend, nor would I even have interest in suffering through even one a month . Heck, maybe one a year.

Marathon distance is just brutal on the body... all of that pounding and jarring of your joints, your intestines.... I can't even explain it - one has to experience the joy for themselves.

I'll stick to cycling from now on, thank you.
