I've only had three recumbents for the last couple years, and people ask about them a lot.
I say they cost about a thousand originally, but I offer that the cheapest ones are around $600 new and the expensive ones cost way more than mine. Also I note the two local shops that sell them.
I'm a pretty large guy so I don't worry about anyone trying to make off with one in front of me... When I'm out riding and there's other people around (such as at a convenience store) I lock my bikes to something immobile whenever I'm not standing RIGHT next to them.
Friends, co-workers and family knows because they've already asked.

Actually I have told someone the actual price ( $3250.00), and have given a good technical education to support why they cost what they do. First thing I say is pick-it-up.... Hooley sh@#$t is usually a good response....then I tell them how all the components are crafted with better, lighter close tolerance materials.....ACCCKAA ummm is usually a good one from them.....Then tell them; The frame is made of fabric similar to that T-shirt you have on and how the isotropic properties of the weave adds tremendous strength......Fabric?.....there lies the difference in pricing.

I just tell'em, "This bike, the way it's set up right now is...with everything on it...oh, lets see...yada, yada, yada."
If they're not cyclists, it's funny to watch their jaw hit the floor.
Then if I'm on a bike other than my road bike, I tell'em how much that one cost, and watch their jaw hit the floor again.
Then I tell'em how many bikes and trailers I have, and watch their jaw hit the floor yet again.
The really funny thing is, none of my bikes are very expensive for what you could pay for a bike, and even with all together they're a lot cheaper than a car.
