I've only had three recumbents for the last couple years, and people ask about them a lot.

I say they cost about a thousand originally, but I offer that the cheapest ones are around $600 new and the expensive ones cost way more than mine. Also I note the two local shops that sell them.

I'm a pretty large guy so I don't worry about anyone trying to make off with one in front of me... When I'm out riding and there's other people around (such as at a convenience store) I lock my bikes to something immobile whenever I'm not standing RIGHT next to them.

Friends, co-workers and family knows because they've already asked.

During this time you think about your bike passion. Not whether this guy is going to rob you, or not whether he is going to laught at you. No insecurity.

Let him absorb.

Ask him how much your bike cost you? While looking square in his eye.

========================================

All your being nice, and not rude, well at least you think that you're nice and not rude, got you qualifying yourself to this guy. And thus you wondering how to respond, because you don't know.

Now, if you spoke with the guy from your heart, without your insecurities and fears interfering, you wouldn't worry about how to respond. When you worry about how to respond you fear his response to your reponse. As if he's going to get off his bike, and start rolling and laughting on the ground, or else get a gun out and rob you.

People don't do that.

Further, when you were talking to him, you were in his reality. You are not living in your own reality. He was your god, and you were seeking his approval, pleasing him, being NICE. Most people are nice, like that, and think that being nice is a nice thing. It is not.

You should live in your own reality. Where you go after things you like, and you love yourself, no acceptace from others is needed.
Your scale of your insecurity is mindboggling. I would feel sorry for you, but you're such a comical joke I hope you stick around and continue to entertain me with your silverback posting. I can't remember that last time I saw such a one-dimensional character.

Yeah, I know, there's no need to get so butt-hurt about what is generally a question people ask when they find the bike impressive.

Actually I have told someone the actual price ( $3250.00), and have given a good technical education to support why they cost what they do. First thing I say is pick-it-up.... Hooley sh@#$t is usually a good response....then I tell them how all the components are crafted with better, lighter close tolerance materials.....ACCCKAA ummm is usually a good one from them.....Then tell them; The frame is made of fabric similar to that T-shirt you have on and how the isotropic properties of the weave adds tremendous strength......Fabric?.....there lies the difference in pricing.

Darwin was awesome!

I just tell'em, "This bike, the way it's set up right now is...with everything on it...oh, lets see...yada, yada, yada."
If they're not cyclists, it's funny to watch their jaw hit the floor.
Then if I'm on a bike other than my road bike, I tell'em how much that one cost, and watch their jaw hit the floor again.
Then I tell'em how many bikes and trailers I have, and watch their jaw hit the floor yet again.

The really funny thing is, none of my bikes are very expensive for what you could pay for a bike, and even with all together they're a lot cheaper than a car.

To co-workers I say "More than $2000." None of them has fainted yet, but it has come close. One of them started to say how stupid it was to pay so much for a bike, but I nipped that in the bud by asking him if he thought it would be OK if I criticized him for the money he spends on what he is passionate about. We both agreed it would be best if we were allowed to spend our money as we saw fit.

For those who would listen, they understood better when I explain this principal- There is durable, light and inexpensive, you can only have two, your choice.

To a guy on the street with a cheap bike, I will only say that I paid a lot, but cycling is my passion.

I am car free and my two bikes are a Wal-mart hybrid and a Giant OCR C0 that I paid $5,200 for. (Guess which one I have put 4000 miles on this year?)
Of the different responses, I like this one the best. It allows for some discussion as to why one would pay so much for a bike, if that is indeed the case, without getting too tecnical.

have bookmarked him so I can read any new comical meanderings that he graces us with. It is quite amusing to see how totally distorted he views on everything are.
Please djSvlt entertain us more
