Bikes: Some silver ones, a red one, a black and orange one, and a few titanium ones

However, they *do* have lower cost MTB's, as I was dropping off my Fisher I was eyeing the Fisher Wahoo, no idea on quality but on sale at $400, it was tempting...

I took my Panasonic out last night, it feels fast but I'm so outa shape it's not funny. But it's a fun bike to see if I'll like drop bars on. I'm starting to suspect I might like a flat bar better, with bar ends--I didn't get really comfortable on the drops, and I missed the thumbshifters.
Bill Stickland just had a piece on that in the Adventure Cycling magazine. Part of the price difference is due to demand and part do to the prevalence of integrated shifters. The shifters for most road bikes now are very complex and require a lot of effort to build which drives the price up. However, $550 for a road bike isn't that much considering what you get. For example, a Jamis Ventura Sport is $535. It weighs in a gossamer 22 lb for an 8 speed transmission with a compact crank and an alloy fork. Even as little as 10 years ago, a 22 lb bike was world class. You had to pay major bucks for something that light. Today, it's entry level.

easthill, sorry for the long delay, but I finally got some photos edited (well, the wife did the work). Here's the bikes I have.

The Univega is just sitting in the basement, in the trainer. It doesn't sit well in the trainer, as the non-quick release nuts don't sit well in the trainer. Headset feels bad. 24" tires too.

The Columbia likewise is just sitting. One piece crank, steel everything. I don't like the brakes, where it is only a single lever--I tend to ride the hoods. The Univega might get scavenged for that. It's a heavy bike, but I wouldn't worry too much about theft or damage, so maybe I'll turn into a decent rider, leave at work, and see if I can find a decent 10 mile loop that I can ride at lunchtime. Oh, and the kickstand has to go--doesn't work well anyhow.

The Thrill needs a good tuneup, and a new tire. I lost the original (or is it on my Fisher?), so it has a slick for now.

The Gary Fisher Advance is at the LBS. I suspect it'll cost an arm and a leg to get back.

Lastly, I'm rebuilding the Panasonic in the basement. Actually, I may stick it back together today, worn parts and all, and take it for a few rides while I figure out what parts to replace.

Oops, forget a pic of Fisher in full college commuting glory. The U lock went on the handle bars in the front. 39lbs when I weighed it the other day. That milk crate is sized for like 6 gallons, instead of the standard 4. Bought it from an old roomate.

In case you're wondering, that is a sticker from a pair of jeans on the top tube. I'm guessing it wound up on there from when my bike used to live in either my dorm room or my apartment room.
