swelling

OK this may be a silly question. I've seen it mentioned in another thread once or twice and since reading about it I've noticed it. When you ride your hands/wrists and feet/ankles swell a little bit. Can anyone tell me what this is all about and why it happens?

Extra blood, maybe a little bit of other "fluid" (don't know what that fluid might be, but arthritis commercials like to talk about it) being pumped into the joints and muscles being used heavily? You may also notice you look more studlike after a ride as you muscles puff up.

Maybe someone who actually knows something about medicine can confirm or reject this.

OK...maybe it would better be called a 'slight puffiness'. Anyone have any ideas? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Are you getting hydrated enough? I get puffy hands when I hike. Someone suggested I wasn't getting enough fluids. I drink a lot on the bike and I don't notice the puffiness.
