Bikes: One brand-less build-up, and a Connondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra Disc. A nicer bike than I need, but it was a good deal, so... ;-)

Is it just me...

Is it just me, or does it seem that Nashbar's IT department (and customer service in general) have been headed downhill? Twice now I have ordered items that the web page indicated were in stock and available, only to be told by e-mail later that the item in question was out of stock, discontinued, and would never again be available.

One of those really frosted my cookies, because it was a package deal of a rear rack and a rack trunk for the price of the rack trunk. The rear rack was out of stock, so they sent me the rack trunk only and charged me the same price. No notice, no "Do you still want this?". Just "Here's half of what you ordered, for the price of the whole order. Have a nice day."

How hard is it to tie the inventory database into the web server? (A: Not very, just about every other web retailer on the planet does it.)

Nashbar also needs to update their USPS database software since my 7 year old zip code (Hillsborough NJ 08844 40,000 population) is not in their database .

- database still not working, but even worse, Nashbar is now really ugly (what it looks like under OS X 10.3.9 w/Firefox 2 + Adblock):

They must have the backhoe out, because their service has not been close to half way up the hill.

Nashbar has been headed downhill since they got rid of the newsprint catalogs and got rid of the outlet store...

Newsflash: The order lookup works about 1% of the time over the past year or two. I wait 48 hours and then e-mail 'em requesting a tracking number. Sooner or later, any business worth a damn would do an audit and figure out the enormous cost of answering those e-mails.

Nashbar Shorts

I usually ride less than 20 miles, but I'd like to get up to 25 before the snow flies. Right now, I'm getting pretty soaked in regular old cotton-based clothes after just a few miles; and all but uncomfortable after 12. Are the Nashbar shorts "ok"? I'd hate to blow $30 to find out they are sub-par, and it's only going to be hot for another month or so. I don't want to spend $80-100 on just a pair of shorts, for riding a $5 bike all of 20 miles--there are other things to chase after, like a Camelbak. I think it's going to be a year (or more, if ever) before I start doing > 25 miles.

I hate to go cheap, but I'm on a budget (who isn't?), and I really don't have the time to go shopping around at bike stores.

I have a few pair of their basic padded liner shorts, and they work fine. Some chamois is better than no chamois.

I don't know about Nashbar shorts.
Performance Century shorts ($29.99) are OK for shorter rides. The chamois in them is too heavy for my taste, but still OK.
Performance Elite ($44.99) shorts have great chamois, I 've used them for longer rides up to 100 miles. Performance Elite Bib shorts ($54.99) are great value for bibs with same chamois as Elite shorts.

How different are Performance shorts vs. Nashbar? (since they are two parts of the same company) Anybody?

I've got a couple pairs of the Zoic "liners" that I wear under regular hiking shorts, and like them.

I've also been using the Nashbar "Essential" jerseys.

Are Nashbar and Performance really part of the same company?

if you are anywhere near Concord, Keene or Portsmouth you mike try Dicks Sporting Goods, they usually have cycling shorts starting around $30 Last year about this time I picked up a pair of good Cannondale shorts marked down to $30

I have purchased many Nashbar brand products including Nashbar shorts. They are all good quality and certainly worthy of the price (which is always competitive with the name brands).

I use Performance all the time, and so far have no complaints. They have good prices and with 'Team Performance' I have quick shipping and it's usually free. Returns are handled and credited quickly. My 'Team' Membership has been paid back to me many times over in points earned, shipping $ saved, and the free Outside and Bicycling Magazine Subscriptions I received.

I have ordered from Nashbar in the past, and don't remember any problems. Unfortunately, there is always a first time. I placed a large order recently, and five days later had not received any kind of correspondence indicating it had been shipped. I checked my credit card and it hadn't been charged yet either. I tried to check the status of my order on the site using the confirmation number given in an email the day I ordered, but each time I tried, the Nashbar site took forever to get to a new page, and I got "An error has occurred, or the page you are looking for no longer exists." message. I tried several times over several hours, and got nowhere.

I emailed Nashbar and explained the problem, asking them the status of my order. I received no reply, so I called Customer Service. I was told their server was down. I asked when it would be up again, as it had been down since the day before. She said she had no idea. I asked if she could check the status of my order herself. She said no, she couldn't do anything since the server was down. So... I have no idea if my order was taken or shipped, can't check the status online or on the phone with CS, can't cancel if I wanted to... I'm just stuck in limbo until who knows when because they don't know when they'll have their servers back. I'm not pleased.

In addition, I found a discussion on another board concerning Nashbar's lack of online security with their site. Apparently they do not keep customer info (including credit card numbers) in a secure manner, so it is fairly easy to log into someone else's account and order things using their credit card info or vice versa (whole story here: https://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?p=229407).

After this incident and finding this info, I won't be using Nashbar again. And if Performance and Nashbar are indeed related companies, I don't understand the disparity in service.

Ordered on Friday (3/8/2007) with free ground and got it today. I don't think that this is too bad.

Since switching to PerformanceBike style of site, they are having lot of problems. This is what happens when trying to make site development in hurry.
You could access order info just with order number and zip code event without login. This could lead to getting other users order info just by changing the order number. I see now that they canceled the 'order status' screen, I guess to fix this.
The good thing is that they are not storing credit card info for 'one click buy' similar to Amazon, and there is no way to see or re-use the last used credit card, otherwise it could lead to disasters.

Ordered on 7/30. USPS as I figured I wasn't in a big hurry & packages shipped USPS from NY to FL usually take about 3-4 days, so I was thinking 4 days max. Got notification package shipped on 7/31. Nothing so far...

Nashbar

Another discussion of the ubiquitous and oft-discussed (and shopped!) Nashbar.

Firstly, I'm a fan of all things Nashbar. I ride one of their frames. I have bought many things from them. I've never had an issue with delivery, save for it's a touch on the slow side.

I've noticed a couple of things lately, and it may simply be my opinion and a bad observation.

1) Their newly redesigned website is pretty slick.
2) They must have paid that web designer pretty well, because it seems to me lately that their stock seems to be a bit spare. A lot of the really killer deals on stuff that an ordinary commuter like myself uses seem to be drying up. They're frequently out of many sizes in items. And they look a lot more like Performance...more of a boutique shop.

Or maybe it's just my imagination.

Or maybe I bought them out of their other stuff.

I don't care much for their new website... or the new code for this message board really. I use a text based browser with basic frame and advanced tables support and the new nashbar site looks like a rhinos anus to me using it, and BF has a few quirks in this browser now that the code has been updated... but that's just me and mine here.
As far as the Nashbar stock, they have always seemed to have a touch and go stock in my eyes. I'll see a really good deal on something and after contemplating it for a few days it'll be out of stock... or they'll just not have what I want. Why don't they cary brake pads for Avid BB7s dammit!?!?!?!

I hope they don't just become a Performance clone. Since, the real charm of Nashbar was its great deals on clearance items and older stock.

I'm a bit fed up with their perpetual sale tactic. They used to have decent every day prices, and great prices when things went on sale. Now they seem to bump up the prices on things when sale time comes around and bombard you with countless emails about how this is the last day of the sale, only to bombard again about how the sale has been extended. Yuk.

My only gripe with Nashbar is the supposed "order total" is not true when checking out. I get an e-mail confirmation with again the same supposed "order total" only to find out when I check my credit card statement that Nashbar increased the total because of a "tax error."

When I called Nashbar & spoke with customer support I was told that the confirmation total on the website & e-mails are really ESTIMATES & not totals! Horse-hockey, they are the only site out of many that I purchase from that function in that manner. Sure the order is only increased by another buck or 2 but when it says order total at the confirmation page & e-mail it should be just that & not an estimate!
