Go for Shimano M520 mountain bike pedals. Cheap ($50), rugged, double sided and you can walk in the shoes. Egg beaters are almost as good but not quite as cheap. And you can still walk in the shoes...unless you like doing triple Salcows at the 7-11

I've tried SPD, Look, and Speedplay.
I've had Eggbeaters on my commuter for the past 2.5 years.
I like them so much I ditched the Look pedals on my road bike for Quattros.
