Why? why? why?
Why must some people be such jerks.
I had a guy pull up in front of me at a light (i got there first, then he pulled in front of me). This guy was riding a s-works (road bike), and I'm on my Mount-Vision (soft tail trail bike).
When the light went green he started up slowly (didn't use his gears...) and when I told him I was passing on the left, he moved to the left. So I passed on the right, then for the next 5 blocks he sat RIGHT on my tail, like almost drafting. When I moved over for him to pass he could never cycle fast enough to pass me (there was a break in the parked cars, so I moved closer to the curb to give him room to pass, but he couldn't, and then after like 50m I had to get back in the other lane because of more parked cars).
Why must people who have nice road bikes act like such *******s? and really, if your spending $4000+ on a bike, learn to use your gears. (But i do enjoy the ego boost of being able to out sprint a guy who is on a road bike, while riding a soft tail with big tires)
[/angry end of workday rant]
Oh and I know not all people with expensive road bikes are d!cks, just the last few that I have met.

Every lane is a bike lane
Probably because it's just human nature. A more pertinent question is "what shall I do when I inevitably encounter such jerks?".
If I'd been in that situation, a couple of well-timed snot rockets would have fixed the problem very effectively. That said, I've never been that bothered by people drafting me. They sit there for a while, then they get tired of where I'm riding and go somewhere else, it doesn't bother me a great deal, let them sit (incidentally, I have the same policy about people who tailgate me with their cars while I'm riding, which happens surprisingly often).
In any case, it's a well known fact that merely having an expensive bike to show off does not necessarily endow one with the skill to ride it.

There is an idiot born every few seconds. One of the other seconds produces a jerk.
Tis life.
As for drafting, I actually enjoy it most of the time. I take it as a compliment especially when I am hauling. However, whoever is drafting needs to take their turn. Now if I am feeling slow or just not in the mood I wave them by. I have never had an issue with anyone not taking the hint. I suppose if they did not I would just ride slower and slower.

Two H's!!! TWO!!!!!
He sounds like such a newb, that he may have misinterpreted your utterance for a request to move to the left. Joggers on MUPs (and inexperienced cyclists) do it all the time, so that (and iPods) is why I don't say that on MUPs anymore.

Very possible. It happens often on the Burke-Gilman Trail in Seattle. I have re-named it the Bump-Killman, for the crowded, risky conditions there in summer. Consequently, I now avoid using it in favor of the streets when I'm in that area. I use a bell ringer, which is usually never mis-understood, by walker or rider, and can be heard clearly above traffic noise and talking.

Yup, a nice bike and fancy kit don't mean someone is a competent rider.

maybe.... he was drafting off you for a while. Decided at the light he would take a pull, took off slowly to make sure you weren't too tired to follow. Instead you don't want his help and pass him to show up this "roadie". He decides to take his second place position and draft off you again and cry a little.
