Padded shorts
I have NEVER worn bicycle cloths, jerseys, shorts, and or pants. Clipless pedals on my road bike have been the extent of bike clothes, so to speak. I was thinking about padded briefs like "Pearl Izumi Boxer Brief Liner Shorts" or "Sugoi Presto Liner III". If you wear these sorts of briefs, do you also wear the padded outer shorts like mtb shorts or is that overkill? I think the padded briefs alone would be okay, if you buy the padded mtb shorts does that mean you don't wear under breifs??? Hey I know this sounds goofy but.......WTH

You're on the right track.
If you wear padded mtb shorts, you don't need the padded boxers. You would just wear no underwear with the mtb shorts.
You would wear padded boxers underneath "normal" clothing, like sports shorts, pants or non-padded mtb shorts (yes they do exists).
I hope this helps!

It's OK to wear underwear (wicking, of course) under padded mountain bike shorts. Yes, padded liners would be overkill.
Unpadded mountain bike shorts (Mt. Borah, for instance) are great for recumbents.

padded shorts
Thanks for the help....its the answers that I was looking for. I like the padded breifs 'baselayer' more than the padded 'outer' shorts. Then again maybe the padded mtb shorts breath better...
