Cyclist attacked in Raleigh, North Carolina

Today(08/11) a customer was attacked on Oberlin Rd. by three black men in a silver Honda Civic. One of them struck him with a chain as they passed. They then stopped in the street and got out. One of them also had a baseball bat. The were making comments along the lines of, "We are going to get all of you mother****ers" When several motorists stopped they took off. No one got a plate #. The police were called and were unhelpful, saying it was probably a joke and not even making a report. We treid to talk the guy into reporting the officer, writing the local traffic reporter and contacting Sig Hutchinson(A bike/greenway proponent) He was concerned about retaliation from the police but it looked like he was going to come forward.

The main thing: Be aware. Don't get hurt but try to get any info that might catch these guys if it happens to you.
This is the second assault I have heard of (And the cops seem uninterested) The other was near Jordan lake when the passenger in a 300 chysler swung the door into two cyclists, putting one in the hospital.

Wow.... I didn't see this in the N&O today. Oberlin isn't too far from me.

Some joke. This for sure is assault with a deadly weapon. Possibly attempted murder. You don't mention the race of the cyclist but it might also be a hate crime (even though I believe there is no such thing).

The victim should be strongly encouraged to report the officer. If he is worried about the locals then he can go to the state DA or state police.

If you can't depend on the police then who can you depend on?

If caught, these men should never see the light of day. Violent offenders add nothing to our society, they detract from it. They should go to jail for the rest of their lives. Stack them in like cord wood for all I care. As an American citizen, I should be able to ride my bicycle down any street in the country. The sad fact is that I can't.

It happened this afternoon. The only way this will show up in the paper is if this guy writes into the editorial section or the Road Worrier and they print it.

The only good to come of this so far is that the guy was not hurt and several people stopped to help.

The only reason I mentioned the color of the guys attacking is because it is an identifier.

Crimes against cyclists and pedestrians short of murder or assault and battery are low priority to most police departments. I know I have called 911, filed complaints and they never lead anywhere.

Spend more tax money on police and domestic law enforcement so that crap like this becomes a priority.

If the rider had been black and the attackers white, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would already be in your town whipping up a new hate crime law for NC..

how much more do they need? Every big city police force I've seen has more than enough money to completely outfit themselves in gear that would make an infantryman blush.

It's not the money they need, it's how they prioritize the funds.

This is HORRIBLE! Are people Jealous because we have taken to riding bikes. Not everytime you see us on a bike it's because we are saying Screw YOU everyone who is still in a car. This is ridiculous.

And how the police officer took this as a joke....WOW! Law enforcement needs to take some classes..because this level of respect for a cyclist is despicable (sp).

Also since you mentioned the race of the perps what was the race of the victim and the officer..and the the onlookers? I figure race might be important sine you mentioned it...but forgot the others.

I heard that there have been more than one open-door attack around Jordan Lake. Any truth to that? I was down there last week and decided to stick to the bike trail instead of going out to Jordan Lake.

Perhaps the moral of the story is that we as cyclists must be willing to take a roadside beating every now and then.

So sad that crime against people has become so trivialized. Now we have to mention that the perps are black because it doesn't get the same coverage if the perps were white and vics were black. We don't have advocates like jesse and al.

This is why America is so screwed up. We shouldn't have to wait on anyone man for justice to be done. And we shouldn't blame a group of peolple. Straight foolishness. Blame lyes with us and the police. Time to stop whinning and take action
