Mountain Bike for Cross?

First i want to say im pretty new to most of this bikeing scene as ive only ride on trails once or twice a week. Plus im comming back from a 10 years of having not owned a bike at al. So anyways, I have a 2003 Jamis Dakar, and was wondering would it be easy to convert to a cross bike?

Should i change the front fork? the handle bar? the tires? the brakes? and maybe the gears? The pedal im currently using CB Mallet C for the fact i dont always have to use clipless. Thanks.

Is that cross as in cyclo-cross racing: just turn up and ride.
OR
cross as in roadified. Fit slick road tyres (1.25-1.5 wide), and ride.
