Tell your wife that it could be worse. In addition to the four bikes that populate my garage I also own a canoe, Hobie 16, 18' Boston Whaler, 32' motor home, BMW K1200LT motorcycle, Honda Reflex scooter and two sea kayaks. For some reason the golf clubs have been gathering dust? My wife calls our garage Tommy's toy chest. I tell her to give it a rest. After all, I did get rid of the Mustang Cobra and Vintage BMW 535I. They were taking up too much room. ;)

I disagree. My Cannondale is for fair weather. If I even suspect rain, I ride my Bianchi.

That was exactly my point, you have the 'Dale for dry weather, the Bianchi for wet.

I only have two myself. The record among anyone I've ever met was around 17. He was the guy at the Eaglehawk Neck camping ground.

Saso 03-10-04 09:14 PM

4 bikes and one on the way

04 Trek Madone
03 Trek 5200
Cannondale r400 Mtb
Trek 4800 mtb
Bianchi XL carbon in the works.

"One is too many and a Thousand never enough." AA cliche.
Lemme see, I have five bare frames waiting my handy work (C-dale road frame and MTB frame, Fuji, Road Ace, indetermined steel frame) one three speed Raleigh Sports, my Raleigh Technium, the C-dale single speed, the Schwinn World Sport, the Schwinn World, a Peugeot, a Gary Fisher hybrid, a Trek 6500 MTB, a Trek 7500fx, a Fuji tourer, a Raleigh tourer, the Bianchi folder, the Nishiki, Schwinn Collegete, and a single speed Diamond back with full fenders. Doesn't everyone?

mike 03-11-04 04:32 AM

I had about 79 bicycles until a couple of years ago. That was too many.

I thinned down the heard to thirty-some bicycles now and that is still too many.

So, I have gone from none to seventy nine, then back down to 30+ and I still haven't found the right number of bikes to own.

Well, if you have bikes you never ride, then you have too many :)

I have 6:

General Road: 1986 Vitus Aluminum
Off-road/Winter Commuting: 1987 Diamondback Apex
Commuting/Touring: unknown steel (may be a Trek from the mid-1980's)
Triathlon: 1997 Softride Powerwing 700
General Road: 2002 Trek OCLV 110
Fixed-gear Road: mid-80's Schwinn Traveler converted to fixed.

I did the math the other day, and in the last three months I've bought eight bikes at a total expense of 210$. Some of them are for parts/resale. But I like tinkering with them, and the expense of 70$ a month for some relaxing time seems quite reasonable to me. I've got seven I ride, one I ride rarely but like to look at cause it's so purty, and another one I just picked up and will be a rider in 2-3 months or weeks, depending on my mood. Six peugeots, two treks, and a Surly.

mtessmer 03-12-04 02:54 PM

I've got six counting my tandem and folder.

Gtscottie 03-12-04 11:33 PM

Not sure how many is too many. I have 4

Miyata 914 (rain bike)
GT idrive (MTB)
Devinci podiun (Go fast bike)
Santana arriva (tandem)

Zub Zub 03-13-04 01:59 AM

I have one...:( but its a good bike.

woof 03-15-04 08:24 PM

When people find out I have 5 bikes costing a total of about $13,000 they think I'm crazy but no one seems to question the guy who spends $10k on a snowmobile, or $40k on a boat or $80k on a sports car.
(I know a guy who has about $100k into his stereo system- everyone thinks he's crazy)

pdxcyclist 03-15-04 10:14 PM

Consider it this way: how much of your income is spent on things that are generally unhealthy for you (compared to cycling)? From that viewpoint, the new car isn't so great, nor the big screen tv, nor the dinner out (or guilty trip to Dairy Queen), nor the six pack of microbrew, nor the bigger house with the bigger mortgage payments, nor the business suit for the higher responsibility job, etc.

At some point, spending on something that's more healthy than not is needed (which means time as well as money). I put cycling, sea kayaking, hiking, camping, and other worthwhile pursuits in those categories. None of the other stuff is worth it if one's health slowly and surely (or rapidly and surprisingly) declines.

bmw_maniac 04-20-04 04:21 AM

I have 3, saving for a fourth at the moment.

Road Bike - 03 Raceline Performance
Commuter - 02 or 01 Avanti Tarini (I think it's Avanti) Real cheap thing that falls apart
Future Fixed Gear - 92 Avanti Ultra (will convert this to Fixed Gear once I have bought my new race bike
Race bike - saving for an 04 Cervelo Super Prodigy, frameset with custom Ultegra groupset

TLN 04-20-04 10:33 AM

How many is too many? How much O2 is too much O2.

I had:
MTB - Custom frame
MTB - Rocky Mountain Soul
Road - Cannondale R500 w/full dura ace
CycloX - 90's Redline Conquest Pro

Now I have:
CycloX - 2004 Redline Conquest Pro w/full Ultegra
Road frame (for sale dirt cheap) - Devinci never been built up

My stable is small but will be built up again after I pay off my business debt.

Noif666 01-13-05 06:22 PM

I have 4 and a bit...
1. GT Avalanche 2.0 (MTB)
2. Alchemy Diablo 105 (roadie)
3. a customized Dragster
4. Avanti Tarini converted to SS
5. Cuda Atom clown bike, a wee thing with no brakes, great fun and gets a lot of giggles from strangers!

There is always room in my heart for more. I also have a couple of bike carcasses at my workplace too...a malvern star skidstar and a BMX.
