Can I just Pass on this one? It's embarrasing.

I have twelve and just started to build lucky thirteen last night...
I tend to collect them by purpose:
Cruiser, folder, MTB, SS, fixed, touring, road, vintage, cyclocross, winnter beater......

lala, if you need any parts for your projects let me know.

ha, I have no idea. I'm up to between 16-20. Evidently I need to take pics and go find the "photo of your stable" thread to scare people. :D

OK I feel like I'm not the worst one now. 15

I think the primary constraint is having a place to keep them. I've owned over 20 bikes and the largest the on-hand fleet ever grew to was 14 riders not including frames hanging on walls that will never be ridden. I've finally let 7 of the riders go on to new homes over the past few years... sniff, sniff.

Recently departed include:

'97 ProFlex 857 (Actually, this one is still hanging in the garage but was given to our son)
'92 Diamondback
'87 Kuwahara Cougar
'84 Raleigh Prestige
'84 Raleigh Gran Prix
'85 Raleigh Custom
'00 Ventana El Conquistador

The 7 rideable keepers include 2 road tandems, 3 road bikes (one is my wife's), an off-road tandem, and my off-road 1/2 bike.

MadMan2k 01-14-05 12:01 PM

We have my specialized mtb, 2 dept. store bikes, one single speed bike from ~1965, and a few frames/parts from older bikes.

I'd like to have more.. maybe when I move out :P

TassR700 01-14-05 03:15 PM

I have three myself:
94? Giant Nutra Cross/hybrid
2003 Gary Fisher Tassajara hardtail
and the UPS man just delivered at noon today a 2005 Cannondale R700 roadie.

Also have two mountain bikes for the kids, a comfort bike for the wife and a 24" 24 speed kids bike, so the garage is getting full.

For me there can never be too many.... I like the equation of X+1=Happy..... with X being the number of bikes you currently have.

My fiance however has a different take on my "herd"- I have ENOUGH. She put the law down with "If you want another bike, you have to get rid of one that you have already". I have since bought three more without getting rid of the pre-existing this brings my herd to 7 bikes. When I flipped the table and told that she had too many fishing poles, she took all but two of them down to the beach house and left them there.

moxfyre 01-14-05 03:31 PM

I got 3... see signature. The most I paid for any of them, including parts, is $150.

Poguemahone 01-14-05 04:16 PM

I actually don't know currently. I could count, but why? In the last two weeks, four have gone out and one has come in.

bokes 03-14-05 07:16 PM

For some strange reason, i think about this question a lot. I guess because i have a conflict between being a minimalist vs. being passionate about cycling. So i always see-saw, “narrow it down, get another bike, narrow it down, get another bike...”
Currently i have 4
(commuter) Airborne Carpe Diem
(touring) Thorn Nomad
(mtb) Aeon Isis
(beater) when parking in dodgy areas – unknown make
the minimalist voice in my head would like to have just 1 inexpensive uberbike, but that voice is losing the fight.

You have too many bikes when you trip over them.

EnigManiac 03-15-05 12:52 PM

I sold my car to make room for more bikes in my garage:

My wife even (grudgingly) conceded when I bought my latest: A Firebike Disco Beaver stretch cruiser (9' long!) with 3-speed Nexus

Also have a 2003 Fuji Shangri-la beach cruiser, all chrome 20" low-rider show bike and a Giant Stiletto chopper.

My son has two bikes as well: a 16" chrome low-rider show bike and a CCM Road-Cruiser

randya 03-15-05 01:13 PM

I just picked up my 21st bike. Twelve in the garage, the rest in the basement...

For some reason the golf clubs have been gathering dust? My wife calls our garage Tommy's toy chest. I tell her to give it a rest. After all, I did get rid of the Mustang Cobra and Vintage BMW 535I. They were taking up too much room. ;)

Ha. Sounds like me. I've got four. One is a fixie (track bike) and one I keep at the marina for weekends. I have a 39 foot trawler. The garage is full - I drive an AMG Mercedes SLK and have a Jeep for the weekends because my wife's car is small too. I also have a kayak, golf clubs that collect dust, weights and a bench, an assortment of tennis rackets, and thinking about a motorcycle. The only thing more filled with excess in the house is my wife's closet fill with shoes. She also has two bikes.

I just bought a TST Ti frame for number five. I don't need another bike, I just couldn't pass up a bargain. Now I have to restrain myself from building it up before I can afford to.

my58vw 03-15-05 04:13 PM

As long as you have 1 bike for each purpose you are fine...

1. Race Road Bike, For Road Races
2. Race Crit Bike/trainer bike, For crits and training
3. Time Trial Bike
4. Full suspension MTB
5. Hardtail MTB
6. Fixed Gear/Single Speed
7. Beater Grocery getter, school bike
8. cyclocross bike (could be the same as 7)

sbeatonNJ 03-15-05 05:43 PM

5 at the moment just for me, plus you have my mom's Schwinn comfort bike, sister's mtb, and my Dad's beach cruiser. Around number 3 they kicked me out of the garage and my bikes now reside mainly in the shed, usually I have one in my car but once summer is here they will all be in the shed. Anyway here are the bikes

1. 02 KHS Flite 300 (currently clamped into my trainer)

2. 04 Jamis Aurora

3. 99 Nishiki Cascade (a much appreciated hand me down from a friend)

4. 80's maybe 70's Puch Astro Daimler Vent Noir converted to a fixed gear (chrome frame and fork)

5. 96 Mongoose DMC BMX frame and fork built up with my own parts spec

The fixed gear and the bmx bike are my two favorite bikes probaly. I idolized Dennis McCoy as a kid but couldn't afford his signature bike as a kid so when I saw the frame and fork new in the box on ebay I had to grab it, cost like 25 shipped. The fixed gear frame also kind of fell into my hands, but man is it a sweet ride.

I also have a 74 Raleigh Super Course minus wheels and pedals sitting in the garage after I rescued it from the garbage; not sure what I will do with that. I also have been craving a single speed and built a nice wheel with a shimano DX hub and a Sun Mammoth rim I found laying around the shop, so who knows what is next.

iowarose 03-15-05 06:26 PM

I've got two. I left my husband when he had 12...in our small 2BR apartment. He didn't even ride! (BTW, it wasn't that that caused me to leave - but it made it a lot easier. I believe in being able to see the floor and sit down on the furniture in places I live.)

I wouldn't mind another, but you can only do what you can.
