buying shorts

I am looking at buying some bike shorts, and was looking for some suggestion. I went and tried on a few pairs today, but nothing really jumped out at me. I am looking at trail shorts or something baggy, I am in no shape to wear spandex. Any suggestions would be great.

Vulgar, if you can't wear spandex on the bike, just where can you wear spandex? Carpe diem!

Try www.nashbar.com or www.performancebike.com and look for mountain bike shorts.

Unless you are 5' and weigh 350# you can wear lycra/spandex.

The mountain bike baggie shorts are a spandex liner with chamey(sp?) with a baggie short on the outside. Fox makes some nice ones. The down side is that you can hook them on the nose of the saddle once in a while.

PS - Your not planning on using these on the road are you????

On the contrary, i think everyone looks good in spandex (evryone on a bike that is). Put it on and waggle your bum for all to see...

Problem with the baggies is that they get hung up on the saddle too often. Spandex is not a problem and are a darn sight more comfortable, If you really want to look a prat though, get them in bright lurid colours and in a size that are just a tad too small. The overstretching makes them opaque, and gives the bikers behind you a bloody good reason to overtake you, which improves your fitness and speed as you try to catch them up.
