I didn't buy a stolen bike today
I've been looking for a grocery bike. Craigslist had an ad for what seemed to be an appropriate choice. I got there and, sure enough, the bike was what I was looking for. I started checking it out. Lots of little things just didn't add up. Some good parts, some really bad parts, a real hodgepodge. Seller was a little too anxious and was unable to answer reasonable questions. I made a few plausible excuses and passed on the bike.
As I'm driving away, it occurred to me that the bike might well be stolen. Years of bike shop experience backed that up. I don't know for a fact the bike is hot. If it is, I don't know for a fact the seller is the thief. In hindsight, I could have gotten the serial number during my inspection.
I'm glad I didn't buy it. Should I have taken other action?

Yes, you should've commented on it with the police, whether or not it was something they'd be able to look into. If they could partially ID parts it might prove interesting enough to investigate. A sting could be arranged.
Then again he might be a rube for a friend and really clueless. Either way something would be learned. If he sells a lot of bikes and hasn't much of a background it would seem funny.
