Swartz Creek, MI Rider Achieved 20k+ Mile Goal

Gaines Township cyclist Randy Wright beats 20,000-mile goal, promotes Livestrong Collection
by Laura Angus | Swartz Creek News
Tuesday January 20, 2009, 2:05 PM
GAINES TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- Randy Wright, 50, passed his goal to ride 20,000 miles on his bicycle and ride every day in 2008 to promote WearYellow.com, a Web site for Nike's Livestrong Collection.

"I feel so good that I did that," he said.

He biked a total of 22,022 miles during the year, which he said is a local record.

For 2009, he is aiming to bike 24,900 miles during the year, the distance around the Earth at the equator. So far, he's on his way to meet the goal, biking almost twice the amount of miles per day than he was this time last year.

"If I can do that, I could do 24,900 by the end of the year," he said.

He said he wanted to thank everyone for supporting him in 2008, and urged people to visit WearYellow.com, Livestrong.org or call (877) 236-8820 to support the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Of items purchased from the WearYellow.com site, 100 percent of the profits go to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

We see him riding ALL the time! I think it is great he reached his goal. My only concern is on somedays we see him riding when the roads haven't been the best this winter.

Um... wow. My goal is 5000, and I may not make it.

I drove through Swartz Creek years ago, and seem to remember lots of cyclists around. It was beautiful late summer at the time. Too bad I hadn't started riding at that point.

Whenever I hear about feats like this, I imagine that they must not have jobs or families. I could be wrong about that... but I can't imagine doing something like that myself. (Not knocking it, just saying.)

I do know he is retired. Didn't take up cycling until after he had retired from what I heard. As for the family, no idea. I did see him out on Christmas, which leads me to believe he may not have any family.
