Old, old camelback

Howdy... 1st post here. I found an old camelback hidden in my garage that is probably 5 or 6 years old. It looks okay, but how should I sanitize the thing?

gallon of water with 1/4 cup of bleach. Wash and rinse thoroughly. DO NOT use boiling water!

By the time the boiling water is poured into the Camelbak, the temperature will be well below what is necessary to kill any bacteria, but the water will be hot enough to soften the plastic and maybe damage it. I would think that a few drops of bleach in a Camelbak full of water would probably sanitize it. Personally, I would try to buy a new liner.

Go to Camelbak.com and click on the cleaning and maintenance link for more, and probably better, info.

Well hot water will get rid of most of the bacteria. Pastuerization is based on elevating the temperature to what is it 150 degrees? Now boiling does not kill everything. For that you would need an autoclave. But I have not heard of any pathogen that boiling did not kill.

I would wash it thoroughly. Getting it clean will get ride of 99% of whatever is there. Be careful with the soap you use. Soap can bind to plastic and leach out slowly and affect the taste. So go light on it.

Rinse with hot water thoroughly.

Fill it with water to which you have added a small amout of bleach and leave over night. Bleach is on oxidizer and will kill bacteria. I would use the bleach in a pretty dilute fashion. Bleach will bind to plastic for the bad flavor also.

Fill it with water and let sit over night. That will flush out the flavors of the soap and bleach. If they are not gone, repeat the water over night until it is ok.

The above should clean it up pretty well.

165F is sufficient to destroy most bacteria.

Vodka would do the trick too.

Go to WalMart and buy yourself a cheap BlackBurn knockoff. Transfer the bladder. Viola.

Exactly what kind of nasty pathogens are we expecting in that liner? Wash it out and be done with it. A little bleach, maybe.
As previously suggested, a new liner would be easy.

This.

In the future; adding a shot or so of vodka to the empty liner and storing it in the freezer will prevent anything from growing if you know you won't be using the thing for a while.

Well technically, some will survive; all of the spore-forming bacteria will survive boiling and much else besides. The agents of tetanus, botulism, gas gangrene, and anthrax are spore formers and are part of a family that are the most durable life forms we know once they produce spores. Luckily, none of these guys are medically significant in the plastic bladder scenario described.

Wash, fill again with water with a couple of drops of chlorox, allow to 'sit' overnight, empty, use. Be sure to include flushing the tube and valve in this drill.
