Bicycles for Bushfire Survivor Children

Many of you have likely heard about the Australian Bushfires which burnt approx. 450,000 hectares of land, destroyed about 2000 homes rendering about 7000 people homeless, and killing over 200 people (209 at latest count). It is one of the worst fires in the world over the past 150 years. The memorial service for the victims is today.

My husband, Rowan, was one of the 7000 people whose homes burnt down in those fires, but thankfully he escaped with his life.

It is now 2 weeks since the day dubbed "Black Saturday" ... the day on which most of the damage occurred ... and the recovery process is slowly starting. As a part of that recovery process, the children in one of the towns which was completely wiped out have been given new bicycles.

Kids' recovery moves up a gear

THE children of Kinglake are back on their bikes, thanks to local benefactors.

Army officers handed out free bicycles to more than 150 children last night at the Kinglake community centre to kick off a party for bushfire survivors in the devastated town.

There were bicycles in four different sizes from Goldcross Cycles so that every child who lost a bike in the blaze that ripped through their town on Black Saturday had a replacement.

Parents had put their children's names down at community meetings to secure a set of wheels for their youngsters.

Charlotte Blackwell, who turns five on Thursday, was so traumatised by the bushfires she hardly spoke to her parents, Nathan and Janelle, last week.

But the horrific blazes were the last thing on her mind yesterday when she received a beautiful new pink bike.

"Pink is my favourite colour," she said.

"I love it."

Keely Fitzgerald, 9, was also able to pick a new bike in her favourite colour, blue.

She said she was coming to terms with losing everything.

"Yeah, we lost our house, but you get over it," she said.

The party arranged for the children of the area gave them something to celebrate after two weeks of gloom since the fires.
