Washing barely worn liners before returning

I just (20 minutes ago) bought a pair of Novara padded cycling liners from REI. I'm right in between sizes, and for whatever reason I decided to buy the smaller size. When I got home, I tried them on and they're definitely too small. Although I wore them for practically 5 seconds, I want to wash them before returning them.

They're machine washable, but I just did a load this weekend, and don't have enough dirty laundry for another. Can I just scrub them in the sink with some Dr. Bronner's or laundry detergent?

Don't wash them. If I bought new clothes that felt washed, I'd be pretty pissed. Just take them back.

You didn't try them on in the dressing room in the store?
If you had you would have only had them on for 5 seconds. Would you wash them in that case?

No, I didn't really think to. They were in the bike section near the front, all the way across the store from the men's clothes. Also, I like to pretend that I know what I'm doing in public, and kick myself later.

Thanks for the replies.
