so, how'd you make out? End up finding anything interesting?

Just a note, I went to Carl Hart again on Friday, the place is a lot bigger than I remembered it. Not quite as big as Brands, but they still have a really large showroom for a bike shop. Guys there are pretty cool. I'll be honest in that I didn't really look at the more budget-conscious bikes, I was too busy drooling over the cervelo TT bikes and some high-end MTB's.

Are the trails that you plan on riding on all paved? If they are, why would you limit yourself to a mountain bike? I'd be looking at more efficient 700c tired Hybrids, Road or Cyclocross bikes instead, but that's just my opinion.
