disc hub on a v brake bike

The rim on my rear wheel (v-brake) has just split, and the wheel the bike shop is recommending I replace it with has a hub which takes disc brakes. It works in the bike, fits and all that stuff. Is there any reason why this isn't a good idea, or is it fine to have a disc brake hub in a v-brake bike?

Many thanks

Well, unless you are switching to disc brakes, why buy a disc hub? Does your frame and fork have disc mounting tabs for the calipers? I would have them order a proper hub for your application.

While it's nice to have a wheel that can go both ways, just having a disc rear wheel isn't all that useful on the other hand. I take it the original hub isn't all that special and the cost of a new rim vs new wheel is attractive otherwise? If you do get the disc hub and don't mount a rotor, and it's the 6-bolt type, you might want to cover the bolt holes so as to keep the threads nice and clean.

The hub flanges are likely to be closer together, which would result in a weaker wheel.

Why did your rim split ?

Is this a warranty issue ?

Doesthe disc brake wheel they are offering you have a decent rim for rim brakes ?

If it's warranty I'd hold out for something more suitable.

If you are paying for the repair, get the right wheel or expect a discount as you are accepting what they want to shift.

If it is going to cost you the same, get the correct wheel.

i wouldn't worry about the hub. just make sure the rim isn't a disc-specific rim.

Agreed. Disc specific rims are not designed for rim brakes. The surface the rim brake would work on is frequently not flat and not designed to take the wear that a rim brake causes.

My RANS V-Rex came with disc hubs and V-brakes. No way to mount disc brakes. The rims aren't disc-specific. Are there very many disc-specific rims?

If you have a wheel built with a disk hub and rim brake rim, you will have a wheel that is more likely to work on your next bike. I don't see any downside, just more options later on.

Tons. They are preferable because they require less material and are therefore lighter. I've noticed that many mid-level replacement wheels have disc hubs and rims for brakes, I just assumed it was manufacturer economics- it would work for either type of bike.

The DT rims on my Civia definitely are and I suspect the Alex rims on the Swobo may be. Both are disc brake bikes from the factory. Both are fully anodized rims without a machined braking surface while most rim brake rims these days have a shiny silver, frequently machined, braking surface. Many also have a wear indicator groove in the braking surface.
