if you buy a bike at one shop, can you take it to any other shop if you need service on it?

like, if i buy the Trek 7.3 can i take it to the Cannondale shop?
I've also been looking at their bike (Quick 4), and i don't want to be a jerk taking a Trek bike there that i didn't buy from them. but the Trek shop is about 15 mi farther away.

btw, i got a change to test ride the Quick 4, and it is scary fast! i almost fell over too, trying to do do circles around the parking lot. is the trek just as fast? maybe i should be looking for something else

The speed will depend on your legs. If the shop offers you free service for the first year, you cant transfer it to another shop. The Cannondale shop will be able to service a Trek because the components will be much the same. They are both nice bikes.

It depends what you mean by 'need service on it' ?

Obviously any warranty work will have to be done by the retailer.

If you mean repairs after something has gone wrong, you can go anywhere you like.

However, if the repairer recognises that you were going to buy from them and didn't, don't expect them or their pricing to be sympathetic....

If you mean general maintenance - you should be doing this yourself.

Most shops don't make much profit on the sale of a bike, so I would think any shop would like your business. If they don't carry the bike you wanted, you certainly aren't going to buy something you don't want.

Under warranty, and Trek gives you 6 months on any/all components on their bikes and the frame is replaceable at discount for life, you should take your 7.3 FX to the authorized Trek dealer from which it came. The bike shop will gladly set it right for you - and charge Trek top-dollar for the work & parts etc. Warranty work is good for business.

7.3 FX bikes are great! You'll love it.

<EDIT> If you want some additional info on the 7.3 FX, pm me and I'll tell you what problems you may find.

I have taken bikes to many shops for repairs and maintenance and they were all happy for the business. Now, there is no warrenty. But cycle shops make a decent margin on repair work and their margins are very small on bikes. So they are all happy to get the repair and maintenance work.

I just hope my bike one day becomes scary fast.

That would be cool.

considering my last bike ride was 10yrs ago, on a half-ton of steel single speed dirt bike, yeah, the Quick 4 felt very fast.

i barely got both feet on the pedals and i was already halfway across the lot! then i jammed the brakes and almost fell over sideways!!

it does look like i'll go with that though. everybody seems to recommend the Trek 7.3fx, but since the cannondale shop is about a mile down the road from home, it would be easier for me to go get it looked at if something goes wrong.

i've never used a bike with shifters and am afraid i'll bust them soon. then when i'm ready to commute, will get something else. reason is, i don't like the cannondale fenders, but the guys told me it would do great on the bike trail on the nearby park.

Get the bike that fits better. Doesn't matter what everyone recommends...buy the bike that fits your personal proportions and individual needs.

Shops don't make much money off bikes, but they make money off repairs, so of course a shop other than where you bought the bike will be willing to work on it. Some places will charge less if you bought the bike from them though.

Highly doubt you'll bust the shifters.

Fenders are removeable/replaceable. Don't base your choice on that. (What fenders, btw? I don't even see fenders on the Quick 4, and if you're talking about adding them aftermarket, just buy the ones you actually like).

In general, you can take your bike to any shop to be repaired. There are some exceptions. For example, my shop can not order from Trek, since we are not a Trek dealer. So if you need a new derailer hanger, we can not order one of those, only Trek dealers can. Some parts are brand specific, but most things can be repaired any where. It's a rare occasion that we can not get what is needed.
