Kona Dew Plus($630) vs Trek Valencia($900)

Hi,

I am new to the forums and signed up to get some opinions from anyone that can offer them . I have a basic understanding of bikes, but as far as which components are better bang for the buck I am not sure.

I am looking for a commuter bike to put 18km on per day and I am torn between these two bikes

https://www.konaworld.com/08_dewplus_c.htm for $630 tax in.

and https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...ncia/valencia/ for $900 tax in

These prices are in Canadian dollars but translate to about $512USD and $730USD tax in, respectively.

As far as I can tell they both have disc brakes, 700c tires and deore parts? Of course money is important so if the dew plus is solid and almost just as good then I may get that one

What does everyone thing? and THANKS! God Bless

Dew Plus has Tourney and Altus derailers. Valencia has C102 and Deore. Shimano mechanicals on the Valencia are better than the Hayes on the Kona. Valencia specs a CroMo fork, Kona doesn't say. Acera crank on the Valencia versus a low end FSA on the Kona. Better wheels on the Trek.

My vote's on the Trek, but the Kona should suffice as a low buck alternative. You are getting less, but I'm not sure the upgrades are 100% worth the delta in pricing but is close.

I commute also, your #1 concern is reliability, and service.

I'd spend the extra $$$ and get the Trek - without hesitation. The Kona has bare-bones components, and tires better suited for a mountain-bike. I'd wonder what the warranty looks like on the Kona - I already know the Trek is fully covered and any bike-shop that sells Trek are obligated to fully service them - the bill for any work going to Trek. And a free tune-up within the first 6 months.

The frame says butted aluminum on the Kona. While the Trek has their alpha black aluminum - which they use on their high-end aluminum-framed bicycles. Seems odd that Kona claims butted. Either, where the tubing is thinner, part of the frame is weaker, or part of the frame is too thick. But I've always had trouble with butted anything that's not steel or titanium.

That's my honest opinion - get the Trek and ride!

Thanks!

That's great. Thanks a lot guys. Seems like I have some decisions to make. I appreciate the recommendation on the dew also. It is quite a bit cheaper so I will have to factor that in. Thanks again everyone. Really really appreicated

The fork on the Kona is a Project II and is one of the best rigid forks made---EVER. It is fantastic.

I am a Kona Fan but feel that the Dew is a bit heavy for my liking. Compare the weight between the bikes and if no different- go for the Kona.

Get the one that you like best. No need to weigh it. Or look at the tire-tread. Or whatever - get the one you like. It will be the one you ride the most. And that, I believe, is the true test.

The Trek is lighter and more performance oriented. The Kona is beefier and more of an all-rounder. Also the Dew Deluxe is closer to the Trek in terms of price and parts.

If you're going to be riding on decent streets and are interested in speed, get the Trek. If you might ride on trails or have bad roads, get the Kona.
