Your LBS's Point-of-Sale Software?

Greetings, all! Well, against my better judgment, I went and bought a local bike shop.

We've got an old full-screen, character-based, non-GUI, MS-DOS point-of-sale system right now---which shall remain nameless---and I've about had it with this thing. Can't close it out, and it thinks it's still Wednesday. Argh.

If you frequent a bike shop, work in one or own one, can you please tell me what you use, how you like it, good and bad points...would you use it again if you were starting over? Anything pertinent would be helpful.

Another shop in town uses Retail Edge, and seems to like it...I'm tempted by QuickBooks Point-of-Sale, since we already use QuickBooks for accounting/payroll purposes anyway.

Thanks much in advance. I'm heading to the shop to try and fix this lump of turd.

I think at least one that I've visited just used a cheap Royal cash register. They keep tallies and calculate taxes, but not much more. Probably not the kind of records you want when April 15 rolls around I'm guessing.

Don't forget to check to see whether the software you investigate will export to Quickbooks. Since you already use Quickbooks you may find that you like the accounting in it better than your retail software, especially for month end.

We use a cash box, hand written reciepts, and close each night by hand/calculator. As long as your employees are honest and not to stupid, this works OK, and probably better than what you have.

I use a register. It has the token two tape system. One for the customer one for me.
