White guy yelling at a white guy, although it is a more diverse neighborhood than I grew up in. 1st tier suburb of Minneapolis.

I think what bothered me most was that he called me a "little sh--". I'm pretty young looking, I guess, but I don't think I look like a teenager. I'm mid-20's, just bought a house in the neighborhood, married, 2 kids (#2 born on Thursday last week!).

I'm over it, no big deal. I just don't enjoy being yelled at. Fixing that tire today... time to ride!

Hey, congrats! ... nothing like holding your newborn to let you know what really matters in life, and what is just noise (but I'm guessing you already know that).

I have 3 kids under 7 years old. I couldn't even begin to imagine life without them now.

So much for all the racial/red neck/etc banter.

If the replaced spoke is too long, it can and will cause a flat. The spoke should not extend past the head of the nipple more than about 1 mm (about 0.040 inches). Remove the tire, tube, and rim strip to check. A dremel tool can grind down the spoke end, if it is too long

I had the bead on a tire fail outside REI after I had just changed the tube. Some drunk jacka__ came over and started yelling at me for scaring him. Meanwhile I had just scared the heck out of my self. My response was to get in his face and yell right back at him. Plus, my ears were ringing.

True, but if the tire goes with a BANG, that means the tube was outside of the tire. Either there's a rip in the tire, or the tire wasn't properly seated on the rim and the tube stuck out, but I don't think a spoke could actually cause a loud BANG. If the tube is punctured inside the tire, you'll hear the air escape but it won't go BANG.

Either way, get off my lawn you meddling kids!

This was my first thought. I even called the bike shop that did the spoke repair and asked them to replace the tube, but they said:

I don't think a spoke could actually cause a loud BANG. If the tube is punctured inside the tire, you'll hear the air escape but it won't go BANG.
So while they might have reinstalled the tube improperly, I can't prove it, and tubes are $8. All they had was long stem Prestas though... kind of annoying. I also have no idea how old the tubes in the bike are, so I bought a second in case the other one goes out.

Also, FYI, the tube blew with such force that the tire came off the rim. The tear wasn't anywhere near the spoke that was replaced. The tear was lengthwise, about 3in long, with a 1/4in x 1/2in hole on one end (not a puncture, rubber completely missing). So, that sounds consistent with the tube being caught between the rim and tire to me.

I'm trying to picture what happened...

When a bike tire blows off the rim at 90+ PSI, it sure as heck makes a loud noise.

It isn't very common for a bicycle tire to explode.

I don't know what the guy thought the noise was, but I'd expect someone to yell "Holy S!" or "WTF!?!".

(Note; I'm laughing right now)

"Not in my neighborhood you don't!" ?

Not in your neighborhood you don't what? Ride a bicycle?

I don't think bicycle tires blow that loud, often enough that people would generalize bicycles as making loud noises.

On the whole, bicycles are generally considered quiet.

To generalize that bicycles make loud noise is irrational. Maybe he does need a dose of thorazine, as previously suggested.

OK?

90+ PSI
115 PSI! I dunno, maybe the shop way over-inflated.

Don't spend any more tmie thinking about this. The tire blew (loudly), grumpy old man was startled and yelled at you (firecrackers), you fixed the tire, go ride your bike and enjoy this unseasonably warm weather (after all, winter is only 6 months away).

More likely is that the tire came off the rim, and that caused the tube to blow rather than the other way around.

Either way, I'd expect a bike shop that mounted the tire in the first place recently to fix it for free.

And tubes should not be $8. $3-$4 is more reasonable.

fly him the bird. I get random garbage yelled at me all the time. I am white and live in a gentrifying area. It's mostly non-sequitur crap like the op said the guy yelled at him; you can infer who is doing the yelling. One night I was coming home, some guy's escalade parked in the middle of the lane with all 4 doors open. passed him properly on the left, quite slowly (maybe 15 mph). He yelled "slow the f*** down!" got in his car, caught up to me as I turned off and yelled the same thing again. wtf? some people are just weird. and there's racism on both sides, folks. it's not just whitey hating on everyone.

btw: what's with people double parking for significant lengths of time, and turning on their hazard lights like that makes it acceptable? People do this to run into my workplace to grab a sandwich, and I always fantasize about them getting a ticket. especially when they're impatient with me because they don't know how to drive.

I generally pay $6 for a tube. seems to be the going rate around here. When I first moved to Chicago, I didn't know the shops, so I went into the one I pass on my commute to get a tube. $12!!!! and they're known for being jerks.

Exactly. I had a tube blow one time, one time in 20 years of riding, that sounded like a gunshot. All the other flats that I have had-hiss-hiss-hiss--this time though POW.

Maybe the guy thought it was a firecracker or gunshot.
