What you get used to-- Only thing the tandem doesn't like is big dropoffs (Long bottom tube) amd bunny hops. (We can't get them co-ordinated enough)

But if a Solo can do it- so can the Tandem- including tight hairpins where we have to lift the rear wheel and hoik the frame round. And if we want to pass on single track we do- one warning to get out of the way and we are through- whether you are off to the side or not.

We are not as vicious as that but many have decided that they would make it awkward for us and they have paid the cost. Hit a Tandem and you come off worse.

But this is not a "Standard" Tandem. Boxer forks- Full downhill spec wheels- Hope Mono m4 disc brakes with 200 mm discs and an all up weight of 400lbs. It mainly does long distance rides of up to 100 miles- offroad of course- but does get out on the occasional road ride where once you get it wound up- it does not disappoint.

And going back to the OP- the attachment shows the difference in frame size between the front and rear cockpits and me and the Pilot can swop over positions with only saddle height adjustments.

frame size

I am 5' 8.5'' (174cm) and ride a 56cm but I find that the reach is a little too stretched. The effective top tube is 56.2cm so its a slightly more aggressive geometry. I wish I had bought a smaller frame so that I could adjust stem and handlebar positions and saddle fore aft but now I am pretty limited in what I can do. I reckon it is better to err on the small side rather than big. Better to be 2cm too small than 2cm too big. However, in saying that, there things you can do to adjust handlebar etc if it is too big, which is what I am thinking of doing now. So if the 58cm is small and your knees feel like its cramping you in the drops, you can put in a spacer, go for handlebars with shallow drops, lengthen the stem and move the saddle back.

Just cos some people have been jerks doesnt mean you need to ride with a chip on your shoulder against everyone, eh? There can be situations on a singletrack where getting out of the way may be difficult. I have to admit I'd be gawking like a tard if I saw a tandem bearing down on me on some trail, and be thinking more along the lines of "bad time for a flashback" instead of "must get out of the way"

But yeah, if you meant that this has only happened with those who've been deliberately messing with you on the trail, then yeah, they deserve the consequences.

On a side note - I cannot imagine trying to run that long a wheelbase on trails. Hats off for even trying, nevermind actually pulling it off.
