Favorite exercise
This may be a cycling forum, but I believe many of us practice other forms of bodily exercise. In fact, some of us may actually prefer other exercises to cycling.
Is cycling your favorite exercise? (Is it your only exercise?) If not, what is your favorite form of exercise? I enjoy walking. There are even times I enjoy it more than cycling, such as when I need some recovery time from riding, or I feel like a change of pace. I might really enjoy running, but my back rebels against it. :( Stair climbing is a rush, but a bit on the boring side. I think hiking/camping would be fantastic, but I don't have the time (no one else in the family would be able to hike with me.) I haven't even mentioned sports, like soccer, football, rugby, baseball, basketball, golf, tennis... I am toying with the idea of trying other things, including rollerblading! :D But overall, I like cycling best (so far.) |

Oh yeah, I also like running occasionally on the beach, but at the moment my running shoes are stuffed and I don't have the money to replace them :( |
I prefer cycling far and away. It's not just physical exercise; it's poetry... and I can do it for hours.
I do like running. It has a poetry all its own, but it does violence to my joints. I've never raced, but in training, I have a 42 minute 10k, so I think I could be competitive in my age group, so I'm thinking of trying a duathlon this year. In the winter, I go to the gtym a lot, spin and use the elliptical trainer, which isn't exactly enjoyable, but does the trick. I always include weights in my gym workouts and 200 situps and at least 50 pushups. But nothing compares to cycling... |
I am lucky enough to live in a town where escape to the mountains is easy. So skiing and trekking are my favorites, along with biking. When I used to live in the city, my favorite was biking by far.

In the summer, for me it's cycling, but I also do some canoing and walking.
In the winter I put away the bike and go cross-country skiing. I like it as much as cycling, and I think they are very complementary sports. |
Running, far and away my fav! Cycling is up there, but running gets top billing.
Velocipedo - You should race, you'd do great with a 42 min. 10K time. PH :D |
Of forms of exercise mentionable on a PG-rated, family-oriented site such as this, my favorites would be:
1. Running 2. Cycling in that order. But running is out--too harsh and injury-productive. I would list walking but it's so BORING I can hardly stand it. It's great exercise, though. Probably better even than cycling, cheaper, and less dangerous. |

Cycling is by far my favourite exercise, although I also enjoy hiking, jogging, fast walking, moderate weightlifting, and indoor or outdoor rowing. Because my hand-eye and large muscle coordination is so abysmal, I have never been a successful team sports player. |

Cycling and hiking probably tie, I also enjoy swimming (or at least splasing around ;) ) but as I don't like indoor pools its a case of Summer only, either in the sea or the local outdoor pool.
Never been a fan of sports. Richard |
Another favorite exercise of mine is mountaineering.
Living near the Scottish border it is quite handy for trips into the highlands . My friend who ownes a car (i dont) often takes me along when he is doing what they call in this part of the world "Munroe bagging" that is a list of mountains over 3,000ft in Scotland . I am lagging way behind in the count having just climbed 83 of the peaks to his 196. I think there about 279 altogether , so i have still many to go at , that should keep me in lots of exercise alternative to the cycling in the future  |
Cycling no doubt favorite exercise. could not stop myself other day, went about a huge circle about my town three times in order to climb my favorite Schearer's grade three times. Just circling my town three times caused me to ride 78 miles.
I used to run and with my headphones on enjoyed it. But my joints are now paying the price. I often do not realize it but scuba is exercise. After three strenous dives, you can come up exhausted. It now seems to me riding atop my favorite crest of hills is as religious an event, as being under my favorite kelp paddies. I do have a Total gym. Use it about three times a week. In the AM when I get up, I do 150 situps and 35 pushups. ps- Guess an indication that cycyling is my favorite sport- changed my computer password at work from a scuba to a cycle related word. |
1. cycling
2. Heavy weight lifting (bench press, squats, deadlifts, rows, dips, flies, weighted crunches). 3. Walking and hiking (Never miss a day of a 2-3 mile walk/hike unless I have had a major ride). That's it guys and gals. |
Cycling is fave, then swimming ( I got into doing a mile on a Tuesday and than again on a Thursday as physio after my accident) and I think it's the rythmic hypnotic nature of both which appeals.
then racket sports (particularly badminton). I hate running as I have a dodgy knee, and now, ankle |
Cycling is certainly my primary form of exercise. I also play volleyball in a Thursday night league. I, too, enjoy badminton, but it is not very popular in the U.S., so it is tough to find a worthy opponent and a place to play.

Biking, backpacking, and snowboarding all get me going.
To say one is favored over the other would be hard. Biking is done far and away more often as it only takes a change of clothes and some stretching. |
I love kayaking more than anything (yes, even cycling). I do mostly whitewater but we also have sea kayaks which my wife and I trip in as well. We usually mix it all up with rock climbing and cycling on our trips as well. It's not very often we don't have boats and bikes on our roof racks.
I also participate in triathlons which is a lot of fun and the training is great because you get to mix it up a bit with the swimming, running and cycling. I just love doing any type of excercise. |
Cycling, swimming, running, cross country skiing, sailing, walking: not necessarily in that order. Each takes it's place as my temporary favorite depending on the time of year. Variety is the spice that keeps me going.
I also do some weights, but it is not, and never will be any kind of a favorite. |
Captain Crunch.
I love Kayaking too, esp in rough seas. Have you ever though about combining biking and canoeing to traverse mixed country ? You can get some really neat foldable canoes, and foldable bikes. Put the canoe on the bike, or the bike in the canoe. |
Cycling, running, indoor climbing and alpine climbing on holidays
I prefer cycling, but running is a lot easier to do, especially when you don`t have time. I do sports because i need to; i always get a little grumpy after a period of non-sporting activities, anyone noticed the same? |
Cycling is number one, followed closely by scuba diving.
Yes it is excercise, especially when you are carrying cylinders for 20 students..... I used to like running but my 48 year old knees don't. Nordictrack skier when I'm stuck indoors as an alternative to the trainer.... Marty |
I like skateboarding. It kind of comes and goes, mostly depending on whether or not I can get somebody else to skate with me.
I also kind of enjoy my morning workouts. Nothing terribly complex, just some sit-ups, push-ups and lifting, but I always feel good when I'm done. andy |
No one's mentioned Windsurfing yet.
I love that! Even went to Hawaii and got to ride some excellent waves! Must be the similarity of trying to catch some air. I must admit, falling in the water is much less dangerous than falling on dirt. Other similarities, Big Predators out there, but you rarely ever encounter (Sharks/Bears). Lots of specific gear for the different type of riding/sailing. O.k. I'm an equipment junky. What else, spending time with friends or solo depending on your mood. Being outside! No matter how good I get, there will always be room for improvement! I don't sail nearly as much anymore(if any), I had to give up one of my expensive hobbies/sports and I couldn't afford a new board and a new bike! But when the breeze is a blowin, my mind starts a wandering! L8R |
Cycling's probably my most frequent form of exercise, and I do enjoy it lots. I find swimming very relaxing though. I loathe running, and walking is just tedious.
I really enjoy a good game of squash, although haven't played for a while, and I do enjoy badminton, just not quite as much. I enjoy team sports like soccer and field hockey, but haven't really played either since last winter. My favourite sport is cricket, but I'm not sure it's really exercise... Even as a wicket keeper! Ellie |
Walking, hiking, and cycling. Of course the order may change as I build my cycling muscles :)

Ultimate. Ultimate frisbee, that is, not "ultimate fighting championships". Not to be confused with two people throwing a disc around at the beach, or playing catch with your dog -- it's a field sport. When played well, it's a very fast moving sport, with lots of running, amazing throws, spectacular catches, awesome interceptions. Where I play it -- it's co-ed, frequently played in silly costumes, and also involves making up a cheer and singing it to the other team afterwards. I like it because it is less about the game than it is about the play.
I also used to do a martial art called wing chun kung fu. I miss it terribly, but haven't figured out how to fit back into my life again. Occasionally I will practice a bit with a heavy bag but it's not quite the same... I cycle and walk in order to get places. One of my big incentives for cycling this year was ultimate -- I needed to get to games, and that meant I needed flexible, reliable transportation that didn't rely on making arrangement with others. I do have to admit, however, that I would now be sad if my commute to work were to suddenly become substantially shorter. |
