Why spend money for separate bicycle commercials, when so many car and especially SUV adds include bicycles in them?

Because pushing the channel makes more sense in terms of ROI. I don't know how they spend their marketing dollars and haven't studied bike companies, but I'd wager that they have large a large "sales force" of reps that go out to LBS regularly and educate salesmen, make sure their bikes are prominently displayed, and that their literature and logos are all over the place. That is to ensure the uneducated bike buyer who walks into the LBS and says "I need help looking for a bike" gets a salesman amenable to their product.

They probably also have lots of gloss in trade magazines and cycling magazines to capture the high-dollar-spending enthusiast who is looking for the latest-greatest.

commercials hell, more people smoke cigarettes on tv than ride a bike(there are'nt any smokers on tv anymore).when was the last time you saw anyone on tv ride a bike? Not including movies on tv(Pee Wee's big adventure).A few years ago a bike magazine did an article on how often bikes appear on tv at all.Surprisingly tv ads very often had a bike in them-not as a focal point -kind of in the background.

Cyclists on the road ARE a form of advertisement.

I only know of two that use bikes. One was for Creditreport.com and I don't remember what the other one was but I don't believe it was a bike commercial in either case. The one I can’t remember had people riding around on a bike and every time they would get off of it some other person would get on and ride somewhere else.

I don't think that you can count the credit report ad as pro-bicycling. If its the same one that ran here the guy is riding the bike because he can't get a car loan due to his poor credit rating.

Now the beer commercial showing a guy riding a fat tire bike to return empty beer bottles is definitely pro-bike and pro-environment.

Errol Morris did that series. Pure art.

I'm really sick of the FreeCreditReport commercials featuring the dude who rides a bike because he can't afford a car loan because of his crappy credit.

Good. I have crappy credit, too. $75,000 in student loans, $1500 in credit cards, $17,500 in medical bills, $-47 owed to Bank of America, and a $19 unpaid water bill from another apartment I'll get to, eventually.

I'm sick of being defined by my SSN, DOB, and my credit score. **** the United States of America.
