overheard while biking

what are some interesting things you have overhheard while riding?

a 4yr. old at my kids' school looked at me and my bike and said "yeah, i can ride a bike without training wheels too"

while speeding up to make the green light "whoa, go speed racer!" from an old man walking on the sidewalk

veloGeezer 05-21-10 11:02 AM

Where I ride, I never see humans at a close enough proximity to hear what they might be saying

a wave from thier tractor out in the field is the closest I get

caloso 05-21-10 11:27 AM

On the roll back into town from the weekly training ride, we heard a street person yelling "This is not France! This is not France!"

Metaluna 05-21-10 11:30 AM

At least you folks have some witty people around. I usually just get punks screaming "f*gg*t" from speeding pickups.

During my commute home through E CLE a fat hooker walked into the road, faced me, pulled her top up and said "Come on sugar".
I had to swerve to miss her.
But I was a gentleman and said "Thanks baby"

.....Disturbing.....

Enjoy

Another night, same neighborhood a car pulled up beside me and the hoodlum in the passenger seat said "You a cop aint you"
I said "no why"
He said "You look like a cop"
I said "Really, what makes me look like a cop"
He said "You white and you in this area at night"
I said "No man I'm just riding home from work"
He said "Cool" and they drove off.

.....Disturbing.....

Enjoy

"He's RIDING on his BACK!" -- Young kid in a playground, staring at a fellow rider's recumbent Catrike.

I was out riding my Worksman cruiser a while back, and some kid in a yard hollers "I didn't do anything!" I had wide tires, a reflector vest, and a helmet on. I guess the only other ones that do that around here are policemen. Though I've never seen them patrol a neighborhood on bike.

Had ghetto folks from age 10 to 60+ call me a cop when they see me; it HAS to be the same thing -- no 'white boy' would DARE ride a bike like mine through 'their' hood unless he was a cop.

I don't argue the point with them -- I also assume it keeps me from getting bike-jacked.

I get a lot of "hey, get up on the sidewalk" a lot.

travelmama 05-21-10 07:35 PM

I am rarely close enough to overhear anything but a few weeks ago I was cruising at 14 mph or so and when I decided to really slow my roll, a man came up and told me that I ride fast for being a FEMALE. I told him that women are just as fast as men if not faster. He asked for my telephone number but did not get it.

jefferee 05-21-10 08:51 PM

Between wind noise and doppler shifts, I rarely hear anything intelligible.

RiPHRaPH 05-22-10 11:43 AM

Just got back from my 73 mile group ride. We were doubled up and behaving ourselves and came up to a light. A guy in a minivan stopped at the light in the other direction shouted

"Get off the f%^*&@king road you @$$holes. I hope you get run over

His veins were popping out of his neck and his wife was sitting in the passenger seat. I shouted "do you kiss your ***** with that mouth?"

MMACH 5 05-22-10 12:08 PM

From a girl on the sidewalk while I was sitting at a stop sign,
"Whoa, nice bike! But why are you dressed like a dork?"
(Yes, I was in lycra.)

billyymc 05-22-10 12:17 PM

Sound cannot catch me when I'm riding.

That is so weird but hilarious. I'm sure if I had over heard that I would have fallen off my saddle laughing.

Hhhhmmmmm...I wonder if they're related to the jerks in the white car who screamed n******, as they sped past me.

xray1978 05-23-10 02:07 AM

On the MUP I overheard some middle aged women talking about their sex life................. Yikes!

Cyclist01012 05-23-10 07:35 AM

Last Sunday we rolled on to a local MUP (it was the fastest way to get to the road we wanted to be on and were were on a time schedule). My riding partner had his family on a custom Co-Motion tripple and as we pass a rather heafty lady and her husband she loudy proclaims "I've never seen a 3 way before" I thought that the bike was going to hit the ground. I guess its hard to control a long bike when you are laughing that hard.

One of the most memorable was one time when I came up behind an attractive woman in a Cadillac convertible with the top down who was waiting at a stoplight. As I came up, Led Zeppelin was just finishing and all I heard was "And she's buying a stairway to heaven." It seemed appropriate.

rumrunn6 05-24-10 01:38 PM

I heard one boy say to another: "well, he's faster than YOU"

what might be more interesting is what people have overheard me say ...

Bikealou 05-24-10 07:20 PM

"Wunderbar" (Spelling?) While riding a recumbent through a small village in PA Dutch (Amish) country by an older gentleman - white shirt, dark pants, suspenders, gray beard - to the youngster (grandson?) walking along with him.

"Road hog!" yelled out the window of a jacked-up 4WD F350 type pickup with dual-wheel setup in the back.

travelmama 05-25-10 07:39 AM

Within two hours, I got "Heeeeeey!" and "Heeeeeey Baby!" while riding against very strong crosswinds. People!

dynodonn 05-25-10 07:56 AM

Just sticking to positive comments, I overhear a lot from peds on my winter lighting system, and while stopped waiting for a light I even had a couple of motorists roll down their window in a pouring down rain to ask questions about it.

MMACH 5 05-25-10 07:57 AM

"You wanna party?" From a hooker.

I said, "I can't afford a car. What makes you think I can afford you?"

SunnyFlorida 05-25-10 11:28 AM

Not bike related but I still overheard this as I left a busy supermarket parking lot.

I saw a yong couple in the lot unloading what looked like mega bags of pampers into their van. The man suddenly stops loading the van, looks at the woman and says: "Ahhhhaaaaa...Hon? Do you have the baby?"

I was tempted to stop riding so I could catch that expected frantic sprint to the store by one of them. However, the line of cars behind me convinced me otherwise. DRAT!!!!

And yes, people sometimes forget their babies - usually at the register.
