Dumb question about u locks

for nyc a 3.3' nyc chain does the front wheel and frame to the object. a mini u-lock series 2 locks the rear wheel to the frame. i take my seatpost with me although i am going to get pitlocks.
thats over 7lbs of locks though so often when 2 or more of us ride we don't bring any locks and just watch the bikes while some of us go inside for a drink or the bathroom. so nice not to carry them. but when i ride alone i know my bike is going to be there when i get back.
