I had never really heard the term "fred" applied to a poseur before.
To me "freds" were people who rode sort of generic cycling clothes and somewhat worn and beat up bikes.
There is a danger of ridiculing people like this even mentally and then challenging them. Because some of these people are very fit riders who are out on their junk bike and clothes for a recovery ride.
And, of course, the ultimate fred is Fred Hoffman who rides something like 55,000 miles per year and rides a hybrid with radio and paniers. I remember coming across an anecdote about 2 guys on top end bikes and clad in the fashionable bike togs running across this guy. They started to chat and Hoffman told them that he had ridden 150 miles the day before and 190 miles the day before that and he was riding 200 miles that day (or something like that). They both thought the guy was full of excrement. They knew a good hill was coming up so they decided to drop him. Hoffman said it is nice talking to you and hammered up the hill leaving both of them gasping and wondering "Who was that masked man?".
