It's hard for a guy like me, with a DIY spirit and a heavy conscience. In the course of changing over my DIY roadie to a fix/free, I went to Erik's on Chicago Ave for wheel fitting and general advice. After a friendly dude helped me out and complimented my efforts, I wound up blowing my wheel money on a Paramount. Justified, sure, but I lose sleep thinking about the time he spent with me and then I did not buy the big ticket item.
Now, I do go there for tubes, goop and grease, shoes, kid's helmet - and the mech's are the nicest down-to-earth types I've met at a shop. I spend what I can locally, and I do it there, to acknowledge their superior customer service vs. another local chain, which I avoid due to snobbish rhetoric every time I enter...
I guess I'm just trying to clear my mind. If you live in the cities, give Erik's a try. Both St Louis Park and Richfield have been good to me.
