Foot safety

I had a really bad injury as a boy riding bare foot so every since that time so long ago I make it a point to wear good leather shoes to protect my toes and feet.

I see so many folk's riding with open toed shoes or sandals that I have to wonder if these people are aware of the danger they face should the foot come off the pedal ,or otherwise come in harms way, while they are riding.

That said do you ride with foot protection or even think about foot protection??

Some of the people I ride with that wear sandals use the clipless kind, so I dont think the problem is that great as far as their feet coming off the pedal.

I just use cycling shoes

Sorry you had a bad experience, but in hundreds of thousands of miles I can't recall a single incident where I would have hurt a foot if I had been wearing sandals. Skinned knees and elbows have been far more common - but I haven't started wearing pads to protect those areas either.

I typically just wear running shoes with clips and straps. Clips and straps or clipless pedals greatly reduce unexpected foot leaving pedal incidences, however.

I had some nasty shredded toe incidents as a youth, but still get out on the cruiser sans foot retention in bare feet or flipflops (which are perhaps worse than bare feet).

I think men look ridiculous in flip-flops, so I don't have any problems there. I'm sensible enough not to wear them while riding a bike anyway even if I did like them.

Yes, flip flops are IMO the lazy persons shoe for most everything but the show/bath. Flip flops are worse IMO than no shoes at all for riding a bike.

I think you're overstating the danger there a tad (gene pool thinning? really? .

I'd say somewhere between leather shoes/boots and sandals is the best. Plenty of folks seem to get by fine with spd sandals it seems. I've scraped up my ankles on a couple of lay-downs while wearing running or skate shoes. That hasn't prompted me to wear high-tops at all times, however.
