From someone else's sig: "If it's not too cold to ski, it's not to cold to bike." When people ask me if I get cold biking, I tell them that it's no worse then skiing. Sometimes you can watch the light turn on above their heads when you say that.

As for winter joyriding, only if the skiing sucks. We get mid-winter ice storms sometimes, where every surface gets coated in inches of ice, and the only exercise I can get is riding the bike (winter running sucks, IMO).

No exercise and no daylight makes GriddleCakes... something something...

I couldn't get to sleep the other night so I went for a bike ride which always clears my mind and after some fresh snow it was really beautiful to be out riding and I was pretty comfortable.

Will have to tell you all about going mountain biking when it was almost -40C... just for fun.

I understand this really well... we are down to 7.5 hours of daylight now and every day gets shorter and shorter and I strive to ride at least 20km a day, every day, regardless of the weather.

With the right gear you can ride at some pretty cold temperatures and be very comfortable and the combination of fresh air and exercise drives away the winter blahs like nothing else.

I do and I love it. I grew up skiing in New England and so the cold has never really been the issue. Easier to stay warm in the winter than cool i the summer. I avoid riding during snow. I wait fot the roads to clear a bit and then head out.

Joy riding is a loose term for my biking. I do ride every day, twice daily to volunteer jobs and also for other stuff. I don't ride just for the sake of riding, but if I have anywhere to go in town, it's usually by bike.

Riding after dark, (or before daylight) can be very intriguing.

Yep! Temperatures today were 20-25F and we were under a winter weather advisory. Four of us rode 42 miles.

I ride whenever the mood strikes me. I rode to work and back a few times over the past few weeks which left me little time or energy to get out for a pleasure ride. But the weekend before I did some mods to my hybrid and took it out on the trails for an hour or so in 4" of snow to test things out. And I prefer to take my bike for running errands in town so I am out on my bike almost every day all year.

Currently it is -12 C / 9F and I am going for a spin... and it is supposed to warm up to freezing tomorrow.

I'll commute in the single digits F, and I'll 'joyride' at anything above 32F.

BTW, I count utility runs (bill-paying and such) where I just explore and meander, as joyrides, too.

Temps are gonna be in the high 20's tomorrow (which is hideously cold for southern Louisiana) and I'm planning on riding to work. I love it!

The wife asked me tonight, "Are you riding tomorrow because you need to ride, or you like the cold?" to which I replied "both."

I don't mind cold rides. I don't mind rainy rides. But I don't like riding in snow or ice. I just can't ride calmly or relax riding on snow or icy roads. Today it was pretty warm at 5°C and it rained throughout my ride but I was comfy in my rainjacket. But in the evening I had an errand except the temperature had dipped to -3°C, turning the rain to icy sleet. The lawns, sidewalks and roads were covered in slippery frost. I tried to get on my bike and it slipped sideways. No thanks! I decided to do the errand when the world defrosts. Probably Tuesday.

I know, I was hoping you'd say you want to come over and do the nightride with me. Much nicer when you got another rider to watch your back for lions etc.:D First time I went up alone, sort of scary till you get used to the darkness!:p

Today's the first day I'll have to break out all of my winter gear. I'm excited.

Yep. Just went for a ride this morning at about 25 deg (which is pretty cold for D/FW). Now yesterday wasn't such fun... It was 10 degrees warmer, but with wind gusts of 30+ mph it just wasn't fun!

I was in Portland last Christmas... last time I was in Texas was in '92.

sold xmas trees in the cold rain all day yesterday. thankfully I had the right gear from my days winter commuting.

I used to go winter riding when I was ,,,, ummm,,,,, about 25 years younger and had a MTB.

The temperature is not that bad if you have all the right clothes. I remember going out in ~15F weather and getting quite sweaty, but never getting cold. Keeping your feet warm is the biggest problem.

The main thing though is you fall down a lot unless you have studded tires, and only the expensive ones work good. Without them, even if you only ride on "clean pavement", there's still frost/icy spots you find, and usually quite suddenly.

I'm not too old to be out in the cold weather, but I am too old to shrug off falling down a half-dozen times in a 30-minute ride. ;)

It's been awhile and I seem to be having difficulties getting out there now. Don't get it I ride a motorcycle year round with the exception of snow/ice but can't seem to get it together to ride the bike. I do need some type of comfortable clothing for this as the motorcycle stuff is a tad too bulky for it. :D I'm also thinking the dirt bike helmet will be perfect.
